The South Dakota State men's tennis team played IUPUI tough, but was ousted 4-0 in The Summit League Championships semifinals on Friday night in Fort Wayne, Ind.

The teams played at Dr. Rudy and Rhonda Kachmann Tennis Center, as day turned into night, on the campus of Fort Wayne.

In the first semifinal of the day, top-seeded Kansas City defeated fourth-seeded and host Fort Wayne 5-1.

Although the listed score was a shutout, the meet was much more contested than the scoreboard.

IUPUI led early in all doubles matches and SDSU was unable to recover late in the matches.

Andrea Boglić and Parker Lawley played on the middle court at No. 1 doubles. The duo faced Nick Volz and Jacob Bradley at the top spot. Boglić and Lawley trailed by one break early in the match and battled to even the score. The two teams exchanged holds until the very end, when the Jaguars broke and held for an 8-6 win.

James Thorp and Mateus Moreira lined up on the first court versus Deon Shafer and Patrick O’Neill at No. 2 doubles. The two teams started a back-and-forth match early on, with both teams fighting to save service games. In the second game, Thorp saved numerous game points on his serve to remain on serve. The Jags broke serve midway through the set for the advantage, once again. SDSU attempted to get back into it, but IUPUI pulled away for an 8-4 win.

In the third doubles match, Lucas Pereira and Henrique Pereira trailed early, as well. Jason Jaruvang and Jake Hedderig broke early, but the Jacks evened the score midway through the set. The two teams exchanged service holds the rest of the way and entered a 12-point tiebreaker to determine the match, but it was unfinished due to the team decision.

In singles, the two teams battled even for the majority of the night.

Andrea Boglić put forth a spirited effort at No. 1 singles versus Jaruvang. The two were neck-and-neck for the entire first set, but Boglić broke Jaruvang for a 5-3 lead and held serve for a 6-3 win in the opening set. Jaruvang rebounded for a 6-3 second set win and won the third by the same score. The result clinched the meet for the Jaguars.

In the second spot, Parker Lawley and Volz played a tough first set that was decided in a tiebreaker. Lawley hit numerous clutch shots and came from behind to win the set and the tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-5). The match was on serve, but unfinished in the second set.

Mateus Moreira and Hedderig played tight at No. 3, but Hedderig won the opening set being one break of serve. The same fate met Moreira in the second, as IUPUI won the set and the match by one break of serve.

Henrique Pereira dominated the first set at No. 4 with a 6-2 win versus Deon Shafer. Shafer forced a third set with a 6-4 win in the second, but the two were on serve in the third and did not finish.

In the fifth spot, James Thorp and Thomas Gans were dead even as the first set neared its end, with Gans on top via initial service. Gans held on for a 6-4 win in the first and won the second for the straight-set win.

Lucas Pereira matched Henrique’s feat at No. 6 with a convincing 6-2 win versus Armaan Choudhary in the first set. Choudhary followed suit and won the second set 6-4 and, like Henrique’s match, was unfinished in the third.

The Jacks finished the season at 11-11 overall, but posted its highest regular season finish in school history. SDSU also earned the most all-league honorees in school history, as well as the first Coach of the Year award.
