The South Dakota State wrestling team closes out its road schedule at Utah Valley and Northern Colorado this weekend...
The Jacks are 4-6 (0-3 Western Wrestling Conference) on the 2011-12 campaign after posting a 1-2 record this past weekend, splitting at the SIUE Triangular before stumbling at Northern Iowa.
The lower weights continue to pave the way for the Jackrabbits this season. Aaron Pickrel is 21-8 at 125 pounds, including an impressive 8-2 record in duals. Dustin Walraven is 14-7 at 141 pounds and undefeated in conference duals. Nick Flynn, the lone senior, is 19-9. Both Pickrel and Flynn have placed in three tournaments, as well.
SDSU is led by head coach Jason Liles. In his 18 seasons at SDSU, Liles posted a
144-134-5 record to become the all-time wins leader in school history.
THIS WEEK'S COMPETITION
Utah Valley Wolverines – The Jacks face the Wolverines for the seventh time in school history. UVU leads the all-time series 5-1-0. The lone SDSU win was in the 2006-07 season, when the Jacks tamed the Wolverines 34-6 in Brookings.
Last season, UVU visited Brookings and left with a 40-6 win. The Jacks were open at two weight classes, while the Wolverines were open at one. UVU scored four major decisions and three decisions in the seven matches.
Utah Valley is 5-7 (0-3 WWC) on the season. The two teams share two common opponents in Air Force and Northern Iowa. UVU fell to Air Force 26-15 and was edged by UNI 24-18 one week later.
Last weekend, the Wolverines snapped a five-match losing streak by topping two Pac-12 opponents. UVU defeated Cal Poly 19-17 and defeated Stanford 25-10. The Wolverines are led by nationally-ranked Josh Wilson. Wilson, No. 12 at 149 pounds, is 14-7 (6-3 duals) this season.
Northern Colorado Bears – The Jacks face the Bears for the 30th time in school history. SDSU leads the all-time series 18-11-0, but UNC is on a seven-dual winning streak dating back to 2004-05. The last Jackrabbit win was in 2002-03.
Last season, the Bears escaped Brookings with a 26-21 win. The two teams wrestled to a 20-9 UNC lead through seven matches before the dual concluded with two UNC opens and one SDSU open. Those forfeits produced the final outcome in favor of the Bears.
Nick Flynn earned one of the two victories for the Jackrabbits with a 3-2 decision at 157 pounds.
Northern Colorado is 3-5 (0-1 WWC) this season. The two teams also have to common opponents in Campbell and Northern Iowa. UNC corralled the Camels 20-19, but dropped its WWC opener to the Panthers 22-16.
The Bears battled Wyoming on Wednesday prior to a full weekend of conference duals.
LAST WEEK'S COMPETITION
Indiana Hoosiers - The South Dakota
State wrestling team dropped its first dual at the SIUE Triangular in
Edwardsville, Ill., before taking the nightcap.
The first dual pitted the Jacks against Big Ten opponent Indiana.
The Hoosiers took the first two matches by decision before SDSU got on the board at 141 pounds. Dustin Walraven, back in the lineup after an injury, took the decision at that weight by a score of 12-6.
Indiana added a fall at 149 pounds to build a lead, which proved important as Nick Flynn and Dillon Reid posted back-to-back decisions at 157 and 165 pounds. Flynn held on for a tight 3-2 win, while Reid won by a 6-1 margin.
SDSU, that is where the scoring ended. The Hoosiers scored a fall,
technical fall, major decision and decision in the final four matches.
Southern Ill.-Edwardsville Cougars - SDSU got off on the right foot, as Southern Ill.-Edwardsville forfeited at 125 pounds. The Cougars took the next two matches by decision and fall before SDSU started a run of its own.
Andrew Youngblom, also back from injury, started the streak with a 7-4 decision at 149 pounds.
Flynn and Reid continued the streak and capped off their nights in fashion, improving to 2-0 on the day with major decisions at 157 and 165 pounds, respectively.
SIUE scored two decisions, but Nick Mart sealed the victory for the Jacks with an 8-4 decision at 197 pounds. SDSU pulled away in score with a Cougar forfeit at heavyweight.
"We wrestled tough, but failed to execute at key times," head coach Jason Liles
said. "We won three matches against a Big Ten opponent and had other
opportunities. We made the SIUE dual hard on ourselves, but fought back
to get the win."
Northern Iowa Panthers - The South Dakota State wrestling team was back in action on Sunday, but had a reversal of fortunes, stumbling at Northern Iowa, 25-12...
The Jacks started the dual on fire, as Aaron Pickrel scored a fall in the first match at 125 pounds. Pickrel deferred to start the second period, his opponent chose down and Pickrel made that decision stick.
Dustin Walraven added to the SDSU lead at 141 pounds with a 2-0 decision. Walraven scored an escape in the second period and held the riding time advantage for his points.
The Panthers rattled off three straight decisions, however, two of which came by three points or less.
Joe Rasmussen drew the Jacks within one team point with a 10-5 decision at 174 pounds. Rasmussen scored a takedown early in the first period and did not relinquish his lead.
The one-point deficit was the closest SDSU would get, though, as UNI took the next three matches by technical fall, decision and major decision.
SDSU returns home for its sixth Western Wrestling Conference dual, fifth home dual and final dual of the 2011-12 season. The Jacks host No. 11 Wyoming on Thursday, Feb. 16. Dual time is set for 7 p.m. in Frost Arena.
The dual serves as Senior Night for the Jackrabbits. SDSU recognizes its lone senior Nick Flynn for his contributions to the wrestling program.
