ELMHURST, Ill. — South Dakota State right-hander Layne Somsen was named Summit League Pitcher of the Week after pitching 8 2/3 scoreless innings in a win over Atlantic-10 Conference favorite Saint Louis (Mo.).

A senior from Yankton, Somsen struck out six batters and scattered seven hits and walk in earning his first victory of the season as the Jackrabbits prevailed 3-0 in the opening game of a three-game series on March 15. Somsen lowered his season earned run average to 0.94 and has struck out 30 batters in 28 2/3 innings so far in 2013.

The Jackrabbits, 10-7 overall, are scheduled to play Wednesday afternoon at Creighton (Neb.). First pitch is slated for 4 p.m. at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha.
