Carpenter, Jacks come out on top

SIOUX FALLS, S.D.-- Hudson Carpenter fired a 68 in the final round of the Jackrabbit Fall Invitational on Tuesday, earning his first career tournament victory by two strokes over USD's Alex Kline (72-72-65-209) at the Minnehaha Country Club.

Carpenter (-6) notched rounds of 69 and 70 in the windy opening rounds on Monday and finished with a two-day total of 207, the lowest 54-hole score of his career and third-best in school DI history . The senior carded 10 birdies at the fall home tournament.

Carpenter's 36-hole score of 139 is tied for fifth-best in the Jackrabbit record book. The Stillwater, Minn., native's tournament win is the first since former Jackrabbit David Smith at the Kansas Invitational in 2011.

The Jacks took home the team title, edging out North Dakota State(292-296-285-873) by two strokes. SDSU shot rounds of 295 and 292 on Monday and then posted the sixth-best round in the final 18 holes Tuesday with a score of 284. SDSU's 54-hole score of 871 is sixth-lowest in school DI history.

Joining Carpenter in the top-10, freshman Grant Smith (+3) fired a 66 in the final round on Tuesday, tied for third-best round in DI program history. It was also Smith's first top-10 of the season and his short career.

Smith carded rounds of 76 and 74 on Monday with four birdies through 36-holes. The Johnston, Iowa, native came out hot Tuesday, posting five birdies and no holes over par for the best round of his short season and career. Smith's 54-hole score of 216 is also a season and career-low.

Dylan Baker (+11) tied for 19th place at the 6,424-yard, par-71 Minnehaha Country Club. The sophomore shot rounds of 75, 72 (season-low) and 77 for a two-day total of 224 (season-low). The Eden Prairie, Minn., native posted seven birdies and two eagles over the course of the tournament.

Lukas Davison (+14) fired a steady 227 with rounds of 75, 76 and 76. The senior tied for 24th place and carded six birdies during the home tourney.

Freshman Ian Rinken shot rounds of 78, 77 and 74(season-low) to finish in 31st place. The Sioux Falls-native had a 54-hole score of 229, the lowest of his season and career. Rinken knocked in seven birdies over the course of the two-day event.

The Jacks also had Austin Sitter (+9) and Trevor Tobin (+40) competing unattached as individuals.

Sitter tied for 14th place with a three-round total of 222. The sophomore posted rounds of 77, 73 and 72 (season-low), posting nine birdies and one eagle along the way. Six of his nine birdies came in the final round Tuesday.

Tobin finished in 44th place after rounds of 82 (season-low), 83 and 88 for a two-day total of 253 (season-low).

The second annual Jackrabbit Fall Invitational marks the first time in 11-year head coach Jared Baszler's career that both the men's and women's teams finished in first place while competing at the same tournament.

The Jacks compete next at the Cabo Del Sol Intercollegiate (Santa Clara) on Oct. 6-8, in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
