Jacks Two Step to Texas

BROOKINGS, S.D.—The South Dakota State men’s and women’s golf teams seek the program’s first Summit League Championship titles when the three-day championship gets underway April 21-23 at the Sky Creek Ranch Golf Club in Keller, Texas.

SDSU begins play Monday at 8 a.m. at the par-72, 6,953/6,119–yard layout. The 72-hole championship consists of 18 holes each day. The Sky Creek Ranch Golf Club, designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr., is rated four stars by Golf Digest’s Places to Play for 2008.

Last year, the men’s team placed third and the women’s team, seventh.

Jackrabbit Men

-South Dakota State has three top-five finishes this season, including the last two regular-season events. The Jacks have faced league foes throughout the season and have a 7-4 (.636) record.

-SDSU’s best finish at The Summit League Championship came in 2009 and last year when head coach Jared Baszler led the Jackrabbits to third-place finishes.

-The Jackrabbits sport The Summit League’s second-best scoring average (300.4) and have the top-three team low rounds, all set at the Lone Star Invitational March 24-25.

-SDSU has used seniors Hudson Carpenter (Stillwater, Minn.) and Lukas Davison (Fargo, N.D.), sophomore Dylan Baker (Eden Prairie, Minn.) and freshmen Grant Smith (Des Moines, Iowa) and Trevor Tobin (Brandon) as its lineup in the last two events.

-Carpenter is coming off his second tournament title of the season, winning the ASU Red Wolf Intercollegiate in Jonesboro, Ark., April 8. The 2013 second team All-Summit League selection leads The Summit League and the Jacks with a 72.46 scoring average in 28 rounds. Last year, Carpenter finished 14th at the league championship, shooting a 236 (84-75-77).

-Smith has posted a pair of top-20 finishes in his last two outings, including a spring-best 11th-place finish at the Beu/Mussantto Invitational April 1. He is 12th in the league with a 75.04 scoring average.

-In his first season as a Jackrabbit, Baker also had his best finish April 1, tying for eighth in Macomb, Ill. He brings a 77.20 scoring average into the championship.

-Davison makes his fourth Summit League Championship appearance with a 77.21 scoring average. Last year, he placed tied for 24th with a 236 (84-75-77).

-Tobin plays in his first Summit League Championship after playing in all four of the Jacks’ spring tournaments. The rookie has an 81.16 scoring average over 19 rounds.

Jackrabbit Women

-South Dakota State has five top-five finishes this season, including the last two regular-season events. The Jacks have a 13-3 (.812) record vs. league foes throughout the season.

-SDSU’s best finish at The Summit League Championship came in 2008 and 2010 when Baszler led the Jackrabbits to second-place finishes.

-The Jackrabbits sport The Summit League’s third-best scoring average (317.5).

-SDSU has used junior Myranda Dunmire (Palmdale, Calif.), sophomores Sydney MacDonald (Calgary, Alberta) and Brianna Janu (Glenwood, Minn.) and freshman Islamiah Fuad (Perak, Malaysia) as its scoring lineup in the last two events. Freshman Megan Mingo (Yankton) has split time in the lineup, but has played in the last two outings.

-MacDonald is coming off the best finish of her career, finishing as the runner-up at the Dolores Black Falcon Invitational, April 13. Her second-place finish was the second-best finish at a tournament in school history. Only one Jackrabbit, Hillary Gerster (2007-09), had a better finish, tying for first at the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic in Chandler, Ariz., in 2008.

MacDonald, this week’s Summit League Female Golfer of the Week, has three top-five and four top-10 finishes this season and is eighth in The Summit League and leads the Jacks with a 78.64 scoring average in 28 rounds. At the 2013 Summit League Championship, MacDonald shot a 260 (85-91-84) to finish tied for 32nd.

-Fuad has four top-20 finishes this season, including a spring-best third-place outing at the Southern Utah University Thunderbird Invitational March 14. She is 13th in the league with an 80.25 scoring average.

-In her first season as a Jackrabbit, Mingo had her best finish this past fall, tying for third at the Jackrabbit Fall Invitational. She has one top-five and one top-10 finish this season and brings an 80.80 scoring average into the championship.

-Janu makes her second Summit League Championship appearance this week and has an 81.32 scoring average. Last year, she placed tied for 39th with a 273 (94-89-90) at the championship.

-Dunmire will play in her first Summit League Championship after playing in all four of the Jacks’ spring tournaments. She has an 81.50 scoring average over 16 rounds, but has turned in two top-20 finishes this season, including a personal-best finish of 17th at the Kansas City Shootout April 8.

-Last year, Kansas City won The Summit League Men’s Championship and North Dakota State the women’s title.

-The Summit League’s winner receives an automatic bid to the 2014 NCAA Men's Golf Regionals is May 15-17, while the 2014 NCAA Women's Regionals is May 8-10.

-Announcement of the NCAA Men's Regional fields and pairings are slated for May 5, at 9 p.m., while the NCAA Women's Regional fields and pairings are scheduled for April 28, at 9 p.m.
