Jackrabbit Spotlight with Nolan Meyer
Why did you choose to go to South Dakota State?
I came here because it's close to home. I'd been talking to Coach Baszler about coming here, and it was one of the only Division I schools that offered me. It was the best choice for me.
Are there any pro golfers you look up to or model yourself after?
My favorite golfer is Boo Weekley, but I don't really try to model myself after him. I just like watching him play.
Can you explain what it was like finishing tied for third at the Summit League Championships last season?
It was awesome finishing third. I put two solid rounds together coming in. It just felt good to get that off my chest and play really well in a college tournament.
Can you tell us what it's like to be ranked in the top-10 in school history in top-25 finishes in a career, top-10 finishes in a career and career scoring average?
That's something I'll notice when I'm done. Right now I don't really care about it. It's not something I need to accomplish. I go week by week and try to play the best I can each week. Some day when I'm done and look back on that stuff it will be cool to see, but right now it's not something I really care about.
Can you explain how important it is to play in tournaments over the summer?
Summer golf is really important for golfers just because it's the season when we golf the most, and it's the season when we excel the most. We get three and a half months off in the summer to practice and play. You have to take advantage of that time so when you get back you're ready for college golf.
How much have you and your teammates improved over the summer?
I think we've all improved a little bit. Looking at our first tournament this season, other than that last round, you can see that we've all improved. We've all taken big steps over the summer to become a better golf team this year.
What's your lowest 18-hole score?
I've shot 65 twice. I did it at Bakker Crossing (Sioux Falls, S.D.), and I got the same score one at Edgebrook here in Brookings. That's as low as I've ever taken it.
What's the best shot you've ever had?
I'd say the best shot I've had was the final hole at the Summit League Championships last year. It was a par-3 about 240 yards and I hit a five-iron about six feet from the hole. I was already five under par, so there was a lot of pressure on that shot and I still pulled it off.
What's your favorite class you have taken at SDSU?
My favorite class I have taken so far is PS102 Crops and Land Management I think. I really liked the lab that went with it, and I got to take it with five of my best friends. It was just a fun class to go to every week.
What's your favorite movie?
My favorite movie is Blood Diamond. I'm a big Leonardo DiCaprio fan. I like that it's a true story and all the action and everything in it.
What's your favorite book?
I don't have a favorite book per say, but Michael Crichton is my favorite author. I've read all his books.
Who's the best golfer you've ever played against?
The best player that I've watched play would be the kid from Missouri (Jace Long) that shot 62 last year at our invite. Just watching him play and shoot that low was just amazing to see.
Do you have any goals or expectations for the season?
It's my last year. I'm a senior now. I've kind of told myself I've embarrassed myself enough the first three years. There's nothing I haven't done before, so I'm just going to go out there and have fun and hopefully win a tournament. That's my biggest goal, and then hopefully I can win the conference or get a bid to go to regionals.
Do you think Tiger Woods will eventually bounce back?
I don't think tiger will come back. I think Tiger is done. With everything that's happened, he still hasn't really shown any improvement. I think he's done.
Who will have a better career, Rory McIlroy or Rickie Fowler?
I think Rory will have a better career. He's a great ball striker. He handles himself pretty well on the course, and I think he just knows his way around the course better than Rickie does.
The Jackrabbit Spotlight will pick an SDSU student-athlete to interview each week. Interviews will be posted on GoJacks.com each Monday.
