Men's golf adds two for 2012
South Dakota State University golf coach Jared Baszler announced Thursday that Joey Pickels of Yuma, Ariz., has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Jackrabbit men's golf program starting in the fall of 2012.
Pickels was a three-time all-region selection. He finished in the top 10 in the Class 2A State Championship in 2010. He finished in third place at the Division III State Championships in 2011 and helped his team win the Division III State Team Championship the same year.
Pickels is a top-200 recruit according to Golfweek.com. He is ranked in the top-10 in Arizona according to Polo Junior Golf Rankings and the top-20 according to National Junior Golf Scoreboard.
"We are excited for Joey to join our program all the way from Arizona, our first recruit from a southern state," said Baszler. "He is highly committed to becoming the best golfer he can be. We expect Joey to come in and make a strong impact on our program right away."
In addition, Austin Sitter, of Sioux Falls, S.D., has been accepted for admission to SDSU and plans to play for the Jackrabbits.
Sitter finished in the top 15 of the Class AA State Championships in both 2010 and 2011. He finished in the top 15 in the 2010 SDGA Men's Amateur and the top five at the SDGA Junior Championship in 2011.
"We strive to continually bring in the best golfers from the state of South Dakota and Austin certainly fits that bill," said Baszler. "He has a huge upside and we are looking forward to his future Jackrabbit career. Austin is a great student-athlete who will fit great into the Jackrabbit golf program."
"Joey and Austin will bolster the overall talent level on our team which is already very high. With only one graduating senior, Nolan Meyer, on the current roster, their additions will help fill his shoes."
