Men's golf fifth at Fairway Club Invitational
NEBRASKA CITY, Neb. -- The South Dakota State University men’s golf team placed fifth out of 12 teams at the Fairway Club Invitational hosted by Nebraska.
The Jacks opened play at the ArborLinks Golf Course on Monday with rounds of 310 and 290 as a team. SDSU sat in second place after the first day of the tournament and only two strokes off the team lead, held by host Nebraska.
The Jackrabbits stumbled a bit in day two, posting a team score of 311 and finishing in fifth place after round three on Tuesday.
Hudson Carpenter was again the top finisher for the Jacks, placing sixth with rounds of 74, 70 and 78 (222). Greg Fehrman joined him in the top-25, shooting rounds of 77, 71 and 78 (226) to finish in a tie for 13th.
Dillon Schultz posted rounds of 84, 74 and 77 (235) to finish in a tie for 42nd. Brian Wynia shot 76, 85 and 78 (239) over three rounds, ending up in a tie for 53rd, with David Smith finishing a stoke behind after rounds of 83, 75 and 82 to finish in a tie for 56th.
Competing as individuals, freshman Miles Knutsen finished in a tie for 20th with rounds of 73, 76 and 81 (230), including two eagles for the tournament, and Lukas Davison carded rounds of 75, 81 and 77 (233) to finish in a tie for 31st.
Nebraska won their own tournament, posting team scores of 306, 292 and 301 for a two-day total of 899, one stroke ahead of runner-up Illinois State. Individually, the winner of the tournament had to be decided by a playoff, with Illinois State’s Ricky Hearden beating out Nebraska’s Kevin Gillick.
The Jacks return to play Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 in the inaugural Jackrabbit Fall Invitational at the Minnehaha Country Club in Sioux Falls, S.D.
