OMAHA, Neb. - Ty Blach and Kurt Spomer combined on a seven-hit shutout as Creighton took the opening game of a three-game baseball series from South Dakota State, 6-0, Friday afternoon at the CU Sports Complex.
The host Bluejays improved to 10-3 on the season, while SDSU dropped to 3-6 overall. The two teams are scheduled to play again at 2 p.m. Saturday.
Creighton jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a two-run double by the ninth-place hitter in the lineup, Joey Bowens, in the bottom of the second inning. The Bluejays added single runs against SDSU starter Alex Oberle in the fifth inning on a leadoff home run by Nick Judkins and in the sixth inning on a run-scoring single by Michael Mutcheson.
The Bluejays tacked on two more runs in the seventh inning on hits by Alex Staehely and Brad McKeown.
Blach struck out eight, walked one and allowed six hits in seven innings as he improved to 4-0 on the season. Spomer fanned one batter and gave up a hit in his two innings of work.
Bowens was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate to lead Creighton's 15-hit attack. Chance Ross added three hits and scored twice.
Four of the Jackrabbits' seven hits were doubles, but the Jackrabbits failed to come up with a hit with a runner in scoring position. SDSU strung together a two-out single by Jesse Sawyer and a double by Andrew Phelan in the fourth inning before Beau Hanowski lined out to left to end the threat.
Oberle surrendered 11 hits, walked two and did not strike out a batter in 5 1/3 innings, falling to 0-3.
