Jacks break out bats in win over UNC
GREELEY, Colo. - South Dakota State scored in every inning but the fourth, setting season highs for runs and hits in a 17-4 victory over Northern Colorado Friday afternoon at Jackson Field.
The Jackrabbits improved to 4-9 on the season, while UNC dropped to 1-8 overall.
SDSU pounded out 20 hits in the game, with 13 different players recording at least one hit. Sophomore Daniel Telford led the way with a 3-for-4 day at the plate, while five other Jackrabbits notched two hits.
The Jackrabbits scored an unearned run in the top of the first inning before UNC came back with three runs in the home half of the inning. With two outs, Jarrod Berggren tripled in two runs and Ben Packard followed with a run-scoring double.
SDSU drew to within 3-2 on an RBI single by Daniel Marra, then took the lead for good with a five-run third inning. A bases-loaded walk to Zach Briggs gave the Jackrabbits the lead and Billy Stitz cleared the bases with a triple to put SDSU up 7-3.
Jackrabbit starter Alex Oberle earned his first victory of the season as he allowed four runs on seven hits in six innings. The senior right-hander struck out one and walked two. Austin Busse pitched a scoreless seventh inning and right-hander Marcus Heemstra hurled two scoreless innings in his first collegiate baseball action after finishing his freshman season on the men's basketball team. Heemstra struck out four and walked a pair.
Adam Hilker, Casey Coy and T.J. Berge each had three of the Bears' 12 hits. UNC starter Joe Sawicki took the loss after walking four and allowing seven runs in 2 2/3 innings.
The two teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. Mountain Time on Saturday.
