South Dakota State University baseball coach Dave Schrage announced the completion of his recruiting class for the 2013 season with the recent signings of high school standouts Zach Holt and Paul Jacobson to National Letters of Intent.

A native of Bloomington, Ill., Holt started three seasons at shortstop for Bloomington Central Catholic High School, but will likely see action around the diamond for the Jackrabbits. He led the team in hitting all three seasons, compiling a .368 batting average with 51 stolen bases.

"The nice thing about Zach is his versatility," Schrage said. "He's another kid that we're bringing in who can play any of the three outfield spots, as well as third, short and second."

Jacobson will enroll at SDSU later this month after an outstanding all-around prep career at Bishop Heelan High School in Sioux City, Iowa. In baseball, Jacobson batted nearly .500 each of his last two seasons, earning first-team Class 3A all-state honors during his recently completed senior season after hitting .493 with an .804 slugging percentage. Jacobson also was a record-setting all-state quarterback who also played on two state championship basketball teams and competed on a state championship track and field team.

"It's exciting for our program to sign a player who is such a good athlete and leader," Schrage said. "He's a five-tool player."

Jacobson has Jackrabbit bloodlines - his late grandfather, Jim Schmidt, is a member of the Jackrabbit Sports Hall of Fame, while his uncle, Pat Schmidt, played baseball for the Jackrabbits from 1991-95.
