PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - South Dakota State scored six times in the bottom of the first inning and cruised to a 10-5 victory over St. Bonaventure (N.Y.) in the first of two games for the Jackrabbit baseball team Saturday.

SDSU dropped a 5-2 decision later in the day to Ohio State, moving to 3-2 on the season.

Jackrabbit starter Kolton Emery worked out of a first-inning jam in the opener. The first two St. Bonaventure batters reached safely, putting runners at second and third with no outs. Emery then caught a line drive and turned it into a double play as the runner at third was caught off base. The threat ended when Emery induced a flyout by the next hitter.

The Jackrabbits carried the momentum into their first at-bat. Eric Danforth and Al Robbins reached on base hits and Scott Splett followed with a run-scoring single. Daniel Telford made it 3-0 with a two-run triple that plated both Robbins and Splett. After Andrew Melton  and Tyler Shannon were hit by pitches to load the bases, Nick Andrews drew a bases-loaded walk and Zach Coppola delivered a sacrifice fly. Danforth capped the outburst with his second hit of the inning, a single that scored Shannon.

SDSU scored runs on an error and a wild pitch in the second inning, then built the lead to 9-0 in the third inning on back-to-back doubles by Danforth and Splett.

St. Bonaventure took advantage of three Jackrabbit errors in the fourth inning to score twice and added two more runs in the top of the sixth against Emery. Jason Radwan and Austin Ingraham started the sixth-inning rally for the Bonnies with back-to-back doubles. Radwan was the lone player for St. Bonaventure with more than one hit.

Splett was a home run shy of hitting for the cycle as he collected three hits, three runs batted in and two runs scored. Danforth and Melton also tallied three hits each for the Jackrabbits, who finished with 13 hits as a team.

Emery earned the victory after pitching seven innings. The junior right-hander struck out five, did not walk a batter and gave up five hits. Talon Jumper struck out two and did not walk a batter over the final two innings.

In the second game of the day, the Jackrabbits led Ohio State 2-1 after four and a half innings, but were held scoreless the rest of the way as the Buckeyes posted a 5-2 victory.

SDSU scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 2-1 lead. Scott Splett walked to lead off the inning and the next two hitters, Daniel Marra and Paul Jacobson, both reached on errors to load the bases. Andrew Melton plated Splett with the first run on a sacrifice fly, followed by a run-scoring single by Tyler Shannon.

The Buckeyes came back in the home half of the fourth to regain the lead for good. The first run scored after a Jackrabbit error and subsequent groundout. Tim Wetzel, who drove in the first run of the game for Ohio State with a double down the left-field line in the second inning, doubled down the right-field line in the fourth and came around to score the go-ahead run on a single by Ryan Cypret.

OSU added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings on respective RBI doubles by Greg Solomon and Craig Nenning. Five of the Buckeyes' 12 hits were doubles, including three by Wetzel, who was 3-for-5.

Buckeye starter Brian King earned the victory after allowing only four hits and one walk, while striking out six, in seven innings of work. Trace Dempsey pitched a hitless ninth inning for his second save of the year.

Shane Kraemer pitched five innings for the Jackrabbits in his first start since the 2011 season. The senior left-hander surrendered 10 hits, while striking out five. He did not walk a batter. Aaron Klatt and J.D. Moore each pitched a scoreless inning in relief.
