Gray team leads Jackrabbit World Series

The South Dakota State baseball team opened the Jackrabbit World Series over the weekend, with the Gray team taking two of the first three games in the best-of-five intrasquad series.

In Saturday's series opener, the Gray team scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning against closer J.D. Moore, the last of which was an unearned run, to pull out a 6-5 victory over the Blue squad. Sophomore Zach Holt was 3-for-3 and scored a pair of runs, while freshman Matt Johnson added a pair of hits for the Gray team.

Zach Coppola led the Blue squad with two hits, while Aaron Machbitz drove in a pair of runs with a home run.

Gray starter Chad Hodges struck out six in 5 1/3 innings. Matt Thomas picked up the win after pitching 1 1/3 scoreless innings. For the Blue team, starter Adam Bray allowed one run in five innings, striking out three.

The two squads split a doubleheader on Sunday at Erv Huether Field. The Blue team recorded a 2-1, walk-off win in the opener, followed by a 9-3 Gray victory.

Each of the starting pitchers in the opener of the twinbill fared well. Blue starter Chris Anderson fanned eight batters and gave up only two hits and one run in five innings. Gray right-hander Kolton Emery struck out six and surrendered one run on three hits in six innings.

Machbitz notched two of the Blue team's six hits, while sophomore outfielder Michael Finocchiaro recorded two of the Gray squad's five hits.

Newcomer Derringer Huff pitched 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to earn the victory. Freshman Ethan Kenkel took the loss.

The Gray team regained the series advantage with a 9-3 victory, pounding out 12 hits. Freshman catcher Trey Lapke was 2-for-3 and drove in three runs, while Jake Ratz went 2-for-2 and driove in a pair of runs. Scott Splett and Reid Clary each had a pair of hits and drove in a run.

Chayse Meierkort was 2-for-2 to lead the Blue team at the plate.

Tyler Shannon pitched the first three innings to pick up the victory for the Gray team. Four relievers combined to pitch four scoreless innings. Nick Young took the loss for the Blue team.

The series is scheduled to resume at 4 p.m. Wednesday. If necessary, Game 5 would be played Thursday.
