Jackrabbits fall to Hoyas, 9-4

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- Five different Georgetown players recorded two hits, lifting the Hoyas to a 9-4 victory over South Dakota State in college baseball action Tuesday afternoon at the Snowbird Invitational.

Georgetown improved to 5-7 overall, while SDSU evened its record at 8-8. The Jackrabbits dropped to 2-3 in play at the Snowbird Invitational.

The Hoyas never trailed, building a 6-0 lead through five innings. Georgetown scored three times in the second inning, highlighted by a two-run triple from Jake Kuzbel, then knocked out SDSU starter Kolton Emery with two more runs in the third inning on a run-scoring single by Eric Webber and bases-loaded walk to Kuzbel. The Hoyas tacked on a run in the bottom of the fifth on a run-scoring single bu Patrick Camporini.

Jackrabbit reliever Blake Fiedelman struck out six batters in 2 2/23 innings and Aaron Klatt added three strikeouts in two innings as the SDSU pitching staff racked up 12 K’s on the day.

SDSU broke into the scoring column in the top of the sixth as Aaron Machbitz doubled with one out and scored two batters later on a single up the middle by freshman Matt Johnson.

Evan Ryan plated two runs with a double as part of a three-run eighth inning for Georgetown, before SDSU scored three times in the top of the ninth. Mitch Foster and Scott Splett each drew bases-loaded walks, with the final run scoring on a sacrifice fly by Zach Coppola.

The Hoyas held a 14-6 advantage in hits. No Jackrabbit player recorded more than one hit.

Georgetown starter David Ellingson struck out five, walked one and scattered four hits in six innings of work.

The Jackrabbits wrap up play in the Snowbird Invitational Wednesday morning with a 10 a.m. Eastern Time game against Baldwin Wallace (Ohio).
