Sawyer, Bougher pace SDSU win
MARTIN, Tenn. - Jesse Sawyer hit a pair of home runs and Stephen Bougher pitched six strong innings as South Dakota State took the rubber game of a three-game series at Tennessee-Martin, 10-3, Monday afternoon.
The Jackrabbits improved to 2-4 on the season, while UTM dropped to 3-8.
SDSU scored an unearned run in the top of the first inning and took a 2-0 lead as Sawyer homered to lead off the fourth. UTM came back with a run in the home half of the fourth on back-to-back doubles by Phil Sorensen and xxxx Milligan.
Sawyer hit his second solo homer of the game in the sixth inning for his 41st career round-tripper.
After UTM cut the margin to 3-2, the Jackrabbits broke open the game against the Skyhawk bullpen, scoring two in the seventh, three in the eighth and two more in the ninth. Zach Rhodes delivered a pinch-hit two-run double in the eighth and Andrew Melton notched a two-run single in the final frame.
Bougher, a sophomore right-hander from Papillion, Neb., scattered seven hits, walked one and struck out two in earning his first victory of the season. Two Jackrabbit hurlers saw their first collegiate duty on the mound as Erik DeJong pitched a scoreless seventh and freshman Kolton Emery struck out one in his lone inning of work.
