Jacks open home slate with 12-3 win
Shane Kraemer struck out a career-high 10 batters in six innings as the South Dakota State University baseball team opened the home season Monday afternoon with a 12-3 victory over Dakota Wesleyan at Erv Huether Field.
The Jackrabbits won for the 12th time in 13 games to improve to 15-10 overall. DWU dropped its 12th in a row, falling to 7-30 overall.
DWU took advantage of some early struggles by Kraemer to draw first blood in the top of the first. Kirk McBreen worked a leadoff walk and Michael Lukkason was hit by a pitch, with both runners later moving up a base on a sacrifice bunt by John Greicar. With two outs, Stephan Gunnell singled through the left side to score McBreen, but Lukkason was thrown out at home to end the inning.
SDSU sent 10 batters to the plate in the second inning, scoring five times. With the bases loaded, Daniel Telford singled to right field to give the Jackrabbits a 2-1 lead. Beau Hanowski added a run-scoring single, with the final two runs of the inning scoring on a groundout and an error.
The Tigers got a run back in the third inning on an RBI single by Greicar, but SDSU responded with a pair of runs in the fourth. Phil Paquette led off with a triple to right center and scored on a groundout by Eric Cain. The Jackrabbits' second run of the inning came on a hustle play as Andrew Phelan scored from second base on a infield single by Andrew Melton.
Kraemer, a sophomore left-hander from Vancouver, British Columbia, struck out at least one batter in every inning in improving to 2-0 on the season. He allowed five hits and walked three.
Reliever Deon Entringer allowed a run in the seventh, but kept the Tigers off the board in the eighth and ninth innings to record a three-inning save. Entringer struck out two and walked one.
After scoring single runs in the sixth and seventh innings, the Jackrabbits tacked on three runs in the eighth. Melton drove in his third run of the day with a sacrifice fly and Aaron Machbitz and Billy Stitz added RBI doubles.
Sawyer and Telford each notched three hits to lead SDSU's 15-hit attack, with Telford accounting for two of the Jackrabbits' five doubles in the game. Greicar and Jon Hart each posted two of DWU's eight hits.
Tiger starter Zac Turbes allowed five runs on five hits in three innings. The right-hander walked four, hit two and struck out a pair. DWU pitchers hit five Jackrabbit batters on the day.
SDSU is scheduled to close out its brief two-game homestand Wednesday against the University of North Dakota. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m. at Erv Huether Field.
