SDSU gets past Gents in opener
SHREVEPORT, La. - South Dakota State struck for four runs in the eighth inning to get past Centenary, 9-6, in Summit League baseball action Friday night.
The Jackrabbits, winners for the 14th time in 15 games, improved to 17-10 overall and 4-1 in league play. Centenary dropped to 3-18 overall, including an 0-5 mark in The Summit League.
Trailing 6-4 entering the eighth, the Jackrabbits tied the game on a two-run pinch-hit home run by Daniel Telford that scored Eric Cain ahead of him. Andrew Melton continued the rally with an infield single and moved to second base on a balk before Joel Blake delivered the go-ahead run with an opposite-field single to right. After a walk to Beau Hanowski, Jesse Sawyer plated Blake with the final run of the frame with a single up the middle.
SDSU added an insurance run in the ninth inning as Cain doubled and moved to third on an effort before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Zach Rhodes.
Trever Vermeulen recorded the final six outs, including three on strikeouts, to record his third save of the season and his school-record 16th career save. Marcus Heemstra, who retired the final batter of the seventh inning, picked up the win in relief for the second consecutive conference game.
Centenary opened the home half of the first inning with three straight singles to ignite an early 3-0 lead. R.J. Talamantes drove in the first run with the third of the three consecutive base hits, and two more runs scored via an error and groundout.
The Jackrabbits trimmed the deficit to 3-2 with runs in each of the second and third innings. Freshman Aaron Machbitz tallied a run-scoring single in the second and SDSU scored without the benefit of a hit in the third. Blake walked and two other Jackrabbit batters were hit by pitches to load the bases before Blake was awarded home on a balk.
Rhodes hit a two-run homer in the sixth to give SDSU a momentary 4-3 lead, but the Gents tied the game in the bottom of the inning and took a 6-4 lead with two runs in the seventh.Laetten Galbraith doubled in the first run to chase Jackrabbit starter Stephen Bougher and Mark Gilean singled in the final run as Centenary tallied four of its 10 hits for the game in the seventh inning.
Bougher struck out five and surrendered seven hits in 6 2/3 innings. Jackrabbit pitchers combined to not issue a walk for the second consecutive game.
The two teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader Saturday, starting at 1 p.m.
