TULSA, Okla. - South Dakota State scored seven unearned runs in the third inning and Kolton Emery shut out Oral Roberts through six innings as the Jackrabbits salvaged the final game of a four-game Summit League baseball series with an 8-2 victory Sunday afternoon at J.L. Johnson Stadium.

With the win, SDSU moved back into a tie with ORU for the league lead at 17-7. Overall, the Jackrabbits upped their record to 32-16. The Golden Eagles fell to 29-19 overall.

The game was scoreless until the third inning, when SDSU took advantage of Mike Torrence's wildness on the mound and shoddy ORU defense to match their biggest inning of the season, scoring seven times. With one out, Zach Briggs reached on an error and both Beau Hanowski and Andrew Melton were hit by pitches to load the bases. Joel Blake reached on the second error of the inning to plate the first run and cleanup hitter Andrew Phelan followed with a two-run double to left field. Eric Cain became the third hitter of the inning to be hit by a pitch and Jesse Sawyer made the score 4-0 with a sacrifice fly. Freshman Aaron Machbitz capped the scoring with his first collegiate home run, a three-run blast to left center that chased Torrence from the game.

Sawyer's solo home run in the fifth inning put the Jackrabbits ahead 8-0. For Sawyer, it was his 12th round-tripper of the season and 50th of his career.

A freshman from Black Hawk, Emery kept ORU off the board until one out in the seventh inning, when Brett Sowers connected on a solo home run. Chris Elder added a solo shot off Emery in the eighth. In 7 2/3 innings, Emery scattered nine hits, walked one and struck out four in improving to 6-1 on the season.

Erik DeJong struck out two as he recorded the final four outs.

Billy Stitz, who tied the Jackrabbit career mark for games played on Sunday with 207, was 2-for-4 to lead SDSU's seven-hit attack. Elder and Schiller each notched two of ORU's nine hits.

Both teams are scheduled to complete the regular season on their home fields this week; SDSU will host IPFW, while the Golden Eagles welcome Southern Utah. Both series will be played Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The Jackrabbits also are slated to play at North Dakota at 3 p.m. Tuesday, before opening the IPFW series at 3 p.m. Thursday.
