GRAND FORKS, N.D. - North Dakota scored four times in the bottom of the fifth inning en route to a 5-2 victory over South Dakota State in non-conference baseball action Tuesday afternoon at Kraft Field.

UND improved to 8-31 overall with the victory. The Jackrabbits dropped to 32-17 on the season.

The game was scoreless until UND put together its big inning with the aid of a Jackrabbit error. With one out, Kris Kwak singled and SDSU pitcher Marcus Heemstra hit the next two batters to load the bases. Heemstra nearly worked out of the jam by getting a force out at home by the next batter, but Riley Beck tallied an infield single to plate the first run of the game and the ensuing throw to first base was off the mark, allowing Kyle Bolander to score from second base. Heemstra was relieved by Shane Kraemer, who gave up a two-run double to Andy Sadler to account for the final two runs in the fifth.

SDSU cut the deficit in half with a two-run top of the sixth inning. Andre Phelan walked and Daniel Telford singled to right field before Eric Cain drove in both runners with a double to right center.

Cain's double would be the last hit of the day for the Jackrabbits, who were playing without five regular starters and managed only four hits in the contest.

Brandon Baumgartner retired all 10 batters he faced in relief of Kevin Auth, including two by strikeout, to earn his first save of the season. Auth struck out four and walked three in 5 2/3 innings of work.

Sadler and Beck each notched two of UND's seven hits.

Heemstra suffered his first loss of the season, falling to 3-1, as he struck out three, walked none and allowed only three hits in 4 2/3 innings. Four other Jackrabbit pitchers saw action out of the bullpen.

The Jackrabbits, co-leaders of The Summit League, are slated to conclude the regular season with a four-game series at home against IPFW. Due to impending inclement weather, the series is now slated to consist of doubleheaders Thursday and Friday at Erv Huether Field. Action begins at noon each day.
