South Dakota State entered the day tied for the lead in the Summit League standings, but the Jackrabbits' hopes for at least a share of the regular season league title were all but dashed as SDSU and IPFW split a doubleheader Friday afternoon at Erv Huether Field.

The Jackrabbits won the opener, 10-0, but lost a 5-4 decision in eight innings in the series and regular season finale to move to 35-18 overall and 20-8 in league play. SDSU will await the outcome of the series between Oral Roberts and Southern Utah to determine its seeding in next week's Summit League Championship.

IPFW finished its season 17-34 overall and 12-16 in The Summit League.

SDSU ace Blake Treinen hurled a five-hit shutout in the opener, striking out nine as he improved to 6-3 on the season.

The Jackrabbits took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a run-scoring triple by Billy Stitz, then broke the game open with seven runs in the sixth. Joel Blake and Eric Cain opened the sixth with back-to-back singles and both runners moved up on a sacrifice bunt by Andrew Phelan. Daniel Telford followed with a two-run single and Jesse Sawyer drove in Telford with a base hit to push the advantage to 4-0. Zach Briggs continued the onslaught with a two-run home run to left against starter Samuel Walker, with Blake capping the scoring with a two-run single off reliever Colton Summers.

SDSU ended the game early via the 10-run rule with two runs in the bottom of the seven. Sawyer doubled in the first run and Beau Hanowski singled through the right side to plate Sawyer.

Treinen worked out of a jam in the top of the fourth, when IPFW loaded the bases with nobody out. However, the right-hander induced a short flyout to left and a double-play grounder to keep the Jackrabbits out front, 1-0. The senior issued only one walk in recording his first career complete-game shutout.

Hanowski led the Jackrabbits' 14-hit attack with a 3-for-5 effort at the plate. Blake, Cain and Sawyer each tallied two hits.

In Game 2, the Jackrabbits rallied from a 4-2 deficit to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh, but IPFW pushed across a run in the top of the eighth and held on for a 5-4 win.

SDSU scored a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the first inning to take an early lead. Blake doubled in the first run of the game and later scored on a base hit by Eric Cain.

The Mastodons countered with a run on a solo homer by A.J. Christensen off SDSU starter Kolton Emery to lead off the second inning, then took a 3-2 lead with two runs against the Jackrabbit bullpen in the third. Will Faulkner tied the game with a run-scoring single and Brett Clark followed with a sacrifice fly.

IPFW pushed the lead to 4-2 with a run in the fourth.

The Jackrabbits pulled to within 4-3 in the sixth inning as the bench came through in the clutch. Pinch-hitter Phil Paquette doubled with two outs and fellow pinch-hitter Aaron Machbitz delivered a run-scoring single to left center to plate Paquette.

SDSU sent the game to extra innings for the second time in the series with a run in the seventh. Stitz led off the inning by drawing a walk against Mastodon starter Lucas Kesterson and moved to third on a Blake's single through the left side. After Zach Rhodes lined out, Stitz was tagged out trying to score on a safety squeeze attempt by Phelan. Cain kept the game alive with a bouncing single through the right side that scored Blake.

IPFW put together its game-winning rally against Jackrabbit closer Trever Vermeulen. With one out, Will Faulker singled and Clark walked. After Vermeulen struck out the next batter, Kurt Dudley lined a single up the middle to plate Faulkner.

Stitz recorded his second hit of the game to put the tying run on base in the bottom of the eighth, but A.J. Risedorph entered and struck out Blake looking to end the game.

SDSU out-hit IPFW, 9-7, but stranded 11 runners in the game.

Kesterson earned his first victory of the season, allowing nine hits and walking five in 7 2/3 innings. He struck out one batter.

The Jackrabbits will play the 7 p.m. game Thursday in the opening round of the Summit League Championship in Sioux Falls. The first game of the day will be played at 2 p.m. at Sioux Falls Stadium. Tournament pairings will be determined following the conclusion of regular season play on Saturday.
