North Dakota State grabbed the momentum with a pair of first-inning runs and went on to defeat South Dakota State, 6-1, in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday afternoon at Erv Huether Field.

The Bison improved to 25-9 overall, while SDSU dropped to 11-20-1 on the season. The two squads are scheduled to play a four-game Summit League series Friday through Sunday in Fargo.

NDSU scored its two first-inning runs with the benefit of only one hit against Jackrabbit starter Talon Jumper. Tim Colwell led off with a walk and moved to second on a single by brother Nick Colwell. Both runners moved up a base before Zach Wentz plated the first run of the game with a groundout. Wes Satzinger added another run-scoring groundout to cap the inning.

The Bison added another run on an RBI groundout in the second inning, then put the game out of reach with a three-run fourth inning. Satzinger started the rally with a double and scored on a base hit by Michael Leach. Max Casper added a run-scoring single, with the final run of the inning scoring on an errant throw after Casper was caught in a rundown.

SDSU committed four errors in the game.

The Jackrabbits notched their lone run in the fifth as Eric Danforth singled, stole second and scored on a base hit by Eric Cain.

One bright spot in the game for SDSU was the bullpen, which had three freshmen hurlers combine to pitch five scoreless innings. Aaron Klatt kept the Bison off the board in the fifth and sixth innings, Blake Fiedelman pitched a scoreless seventh and Ty Walker threw two scoreless innings to finish up.

Aided by three double-play grounders in his four innings of work, NDSU starter David Ernst was able to work around five hits and three walks to pick up his second win of the season.

Jumper allowed all six Bison runs - four earned - in four innings of work. He surrendered seven hits, walked one and struck out one.

Satzinger, Tyler Steen, Leach and Casper each had two of NDSU's 10 hits. Danforth and Phil Paquette each posted two of the Jackrabbits' nine hits.

SDSU closes out its mid-week homestand Wednesday afternoon by hosting the University of North Dakota. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
