CEDAR CITY, Utah - Southern Utah scored in every inning it batted and Chase Rezak pitched a two-hit shutout as the Thunderbirds blanked South Dakota State, 14-0, in the opening game of a four-game Summit League baseball series Thursday afternoon.
In ending the game after seven inning due to the 10-run rule, Southern Utah improved to 16-29 overall and 10-6 in league play, while the Jackrabbits dropped to 14-30-1 on the season, including a 3-11 mark in The Summit League.
After scoring a run in the top of the first inning, the Thunderbirds tacked on three runs against Jackrabbit starter Layne Somsen in the second and put the game away with three more in the third inning on run-scoring singles by Mitchell Kauweloa, Taggart Lunceford and D.J. Andrade.
Lunceford added an RBI single as part of a four-run fourth inning.
Rezak, however, was the story as he went 3-for-4 at the plate and drove in three runs, including a two-run home run in the fifth inning. On the mound, he struck out two and did not walk a batter over seven innings, allowing only a second-inning single by Eric Cain and leadoff double by Steven Autenrieth in the sixth.
Kevin Kline capped the SUU scoring with a solo home run in the sixth. Andrade also tallied three of the Thunderbirds' 16 hits.
Somsen surrendered eight hits and seven runs - five earned - in only 2 2/3 innings. He struck out three and walked two.
The two teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader Friday.
