South Dakota State University pitcher Layne Somsen has been named 2012 Rawlings Coastal Plain League Pitcher of the Year for the recently completed collegiate summer league season.

Somsen, who will enter his senior season this fall, compiled a 5-0 record with a 1.29 earned run average during the regular season for the Fayetteville (S.C.) SwampDogs. In 42 innings of work, the right-hander struck out 47 and walked only 15 batters. He allowed only 18 hits all season, holding opponents to a mere .129 batting average.

A Yankton native, Somsen finished in the wood-bat league's top five of six different categories: ERA (tied-third), wins (tied-fourth) opposing batting average (second), WHIP (third), fewest hits allowed (first), and fewest runs allowed (tied-second).

Somsen won his lone postseason start, pitching six innings of two-run, two-hit baseball.

Earlier in the season, Somsen was selected as the starting pitcher for the American CPL All-Star team.
