Jacks avoid sweep with a 7-1 win at IUPUI
INDIANAPOLIS - Sammy Bingham went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with three RBI and hit her fifth homerun of the season, as South Dakota State avoided a series sweep on Saturday with a 7-1 win at IUPUI.
The Jackrabbits improve to 9-15 on the season overall and to 1-2 in The Summit League. The Jaguars fall to and even 10-10 overall and to 2-1 in league play.
Bingham opened the third inning with her first hit of the day, and then scored the first run of the game later in the frame when Alex Landon took one for team with the bases loaded. The hit by pitch allowed Bingham to score from third to put the Jacks up 1-0.
The score stayed 1-0 Jackrabbits until they added four runs on four hits in the top of the fifth, highlighted by an Allison Huffman RBI double, and RBI single from Marlee Petersen and a 2 RBI single from Bingham that put SDSU up 5-0.
The Jaguars got on the board in the bottom of the fifth to make it 5-1 SDSU after five innings, but the Jacks got that one back in the sixth, and then added one more insurance run in the seventh on Bingham's bomb to left the gave the Jacks a 7-1 lead in the seventh.
Kori Seidlitz scattered three hits in picking up her fifth win of the season. She struck out eight, walked one and did not give up an earned run in the complete game win.
The Jackrabbits look to start a winning streak when they open their home schedule on March 26 at Jackrabbit Softball Stadium against Colorado Christian in a doubleheader at 2 p.m.
