VERMILLION, S.D. – The South Dakota State softball team scored a total of 21 runs in Friday’s Summit League doubleheader against South Dakota, but came up on the short end in both games, falling 7-6 in the opener before falling 16-15 in a slugfest of a nightcap.

The losses drop the Jackrabbits to 11-20 overall on the season and to 1-7 in The Summit League, while the homestanding Coyotes improve to 24-12 overall and to 7-1 in the league.

After falling behind by a score of 1-0 after three complete innings, the Jackrabbits scored two runs in the fourth to take a short-lived 2-1 lead, as the Coyotes came back to take a short-lived lead of their own at 4-2 after four innings.

SDSU came right back with three more runs in the top of the fifth to go up 5-4, and held on to that lead until the home team plated a pair of runs in the sixth to go back on top 6-5.

The Jacks tied the game at 6-all in the top of the seventh, only to see the hosts plate the winning run in the bottom of the inning, sealing the 7-6 win.

Alex Landon went 3-for-4 at the plate in the loss with an RBI and two runs scored. She also took the loss in the circle, giving up three runs on seven hits with a strikeout and two walks in three and a third innings of relief.

Allison Huffman went 2-for-4 at the plate with a pair of RBI and a homerun, her first of the season.

The Jacks fell into an early 7-0 hole in Game 2 before scoring two runs in the top of the third to cut the lead to five.

USD came back with six runs in the bottom of the third to take a commanding 13-2 lead, only to see the Jacks score five runs in each of the next two innings to get back into the game at 13-12 after four and a half innings.

The Coyotes pushed the lead to 16-12 with three more runs in the bottom of the fifth, and held that lead until the top of the seventh, when the Jacks got back to within one run again, this time at 16-15 before the rally stalled.

Landon and Sammy Bingham both knocked in four runs to lead the Jackrabbits in Game 2. Landon went 3-for-5 with four RBI and two runs scored, and hit her first homerun of the season.

Bingham finished the day 4-for-5 at the plate with four each in RBI and runs scored. She also came up a double shy of hitting for the cycle after hitting her team-high second triple of the season and her team-high sixth homerun of the season.

The Jackrabbits look to avoid the series sweep on Sunday, when the two teams meet at Nygaard Field in Vermillion at noon.
