FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Daniel Telford hit a pair of home runs and drove in a career-high six runs to pace South Dakota State to a 14-11 victory and split of a Summit League baseball doubleheader at Fort Wayne Friday afternoon.

The Jackrabbits fell 1-0 in the opener, moving to 15-12 overall and 3-3 in league play. Fort Wayne ended the day 14-15 overall, 2-4 in league play.

After sitting out the opener, Telford put the Jackrabbits out front in the top of the first inning of Game 2 with a two-run homer to right center.

Fort Wayne tied the game in the home half of the first on run-scoring singles by Kristian Gayday and Brandon Soat, but the Jackrabbits responded with five consecutive runs. Telford plated a run in the third inning with a single and Scott Splett opened the scoring in a four-run fourth inning with an RBI single. Aaron Machbitz then followed with a bases-clearing three-run double to right center to give SDSU a 7-2 lead.

The Mastodons scored three times in the bottom of the fourth and eventually knotted the game at 8-all after scoring twice in the fifth and once in the sixth.

Splett gave SDSU the lead back in the top of the eighth inning with a run-scoring single before Telford launched a three-run homer to right field to push the margin to 12-8. Eric Danforth, who doubled in the Jackrabbit run in the fifth inning, added a two-run triple in the ninth to cap the Jackrabbit scoring.

Fort Wayne took advantage of a Jackrabbit error in the bottom of the ninth, scoring three times on a two-out double by Markus Kalber. With the tying run on deck, Jackrabbit closer J.D. Moore entered the game and struck out the lone hitter he faced to end the game and notch his seventh save of the season.

Telford, who was 4-for-5 in the game, raised his season batting average to .491 (27-of-55) and his slugging percentage to .873. He also recorded the first two-home-run game by a Jackrabbit player since Jesse Sawyer against Western Illinois on April 10, 2011.

The Jackrabbits finished with 20 hits as Danforth also recorded a career-best four hits. All Robbins, Machbitz and Steven Autenrieth each tallied three hits.

Soat led the Mastodons’ 15-hit attack with three hits.

Shane Kraemer, the third of five Jackrabbit pitchers in the game, picked up the win in relief. The senior left-hander struck out one and allowed an unearned run in two innings.

Hits and runs were hard to come by in Friday’s opener as SDSU’s Layne Somsen and Fort Wayne’s Jason Kalber were locked in a pitchers’ duel.

Fort Wayne pushed the lone run of the game across in its last at-bat, in the bottom of the seventh. Steve Lowden opened the frame by drawing the lone walk of the game issued by Somsen. Clay Hathaway followed with a base hit to put runners at first and second. After an unsuccessful sacrifice and strikeout, Hathaway stole third base before Kendall Whitman delivered the game-winning run with a base hit to score Hathaway.

The Jackrabbits managed only three hits against Kalber, including a double by Robbins. Fort Wayne finished with five hits.

Kalber struck out six and did not walk a batter in the seven-inning complete-game effort as he picked up his first win of the season.

For the second consecutive Friday, Somsen came out on the losing end of a pitchers’ duel as he fanned five in going the distance.

The Jackrabbits return to Summit League action Sunday with a doubleheader at Oakland.
