PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – The South Dakota State University baseball team suffered a pair of losses Sunday at the Snowbird Invitational, falling 5-4 to Maine and 7-4 to Georgetown.

The Jackrabbits fell to 8-7 overall in evening their record at the Snowbird Invitational at 2-2. SDSU resumes play Tuesday with another matchup against Georgetown.

In the opener, Maine scored four times in the top of the eighth, aided by a dropped fly ball, to grab the lead. The Black Bears opened the inning with back-to-back singles and plated the first run of the inning on a one-out double by Brian Doran against reliever Austin Kost. The dropped fly ball in left field allowed Maine to close to within 4-3 before Steven Adam gave the Black Bears the lead with a two-run single against Jackrabbit closer J.D. Moore.

After Maine, 4-10 overall, scored in the top of the first inning, the Jackrabbits scored the next four runs. SDSU took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of third inning as Scott Splett scored on a wild pitch and Paul Jacobson drove in Zach Holt with a base hit.

Splett plated a run with a single in the fourth and Jordan Varga added a pinch-hit RBI single in the sixth.

Jackrabbit starter Joe Erickson allowed only one run on five hits in six innings. The sophomore right-hander struck out two and did not walk a batter.

Logan Fullmer earned the win in relief for Maine, striking out one in 2 2/3 scoreless innings. Charlie Butler pitched a scoreless ninth inning for the save.

Sam Pack was 3-for-4 to lead SDSU’s 13-hit attack. Splett, Aaron Machbitz and Eric Danforth each tallied two hits.

Colin Gay, Alex Calbick and Sam Balzano each notched a pair of hits for Maine.

The Jackrabbits opened their game against Georgetown with a three-run bottom of the first inning. Three consecutive singles by Splett, Al Robbins and Matt Johnson led to the first SDSU run, with the other two runs coming across on groundouts by Jake Ratz and Michael Finocchiaro, respectively.

SDSU pushed the lead to 4-0 in the fourth on a two-out double by Robbins that scored Splett. A senior outfielder, Splett went 5-for-5 to lead the Jackrabbits’ 13-hit attack. It was the most hits in a game by an SDSU player since Eric Cain recorded a Division I era-best six hits in a 2010 game.

After pitching five shutout innings, Jackrabbit starter Chad Hodges ran into trouble in the top of the sixth. Evan Ryan and Jake Kuzbel opened the inning with back-to-back singles, which were followed by two wild pitches, the last of which allowed Ryan to score the first run of the game for the Hoyas, who sent 10 batters to the plate in the frame.

Later in the inning, Patrick Camporini and Nick Collins notched consecutive run-scoring singles to draw Georgetown to within 4-3. A Jackrabbit error allowed the tying run to score and A.C. Carter gave the Hoyas the lead with a double to right center that plated Collins and chased Hodges from the game.

Georgetown, 4-7 overall, added single runs in the eighth and ninth innings to provide the winning margin.

Reliever Matt Hollenbeck pitched five scoreless innings in relief to earn the victory for Georgetown. He struck out seven and did not walk a batter. Starter Will Brown fanned four batters in four innings.

Hodges fell to 2-2 on the season after allowing five runs – three earned – on six hits. He struck out four and walked one.

Camporini was 3-for-4 to lead Georgetown. Robbins was 3-for-5 and Aaron Machbitz added a pair of hits for SDSU.
