Jackrabbits edged by Creighton, 3-1
OMAHA, Neb. – Jake Peter delivered a two-run single in the bottom of the seventh inning that provided the winning margin for Creighton in a 3-1 victory over South Dakota State in college baseball action Saturday afternoon at TD Ameritrade Park.
The Bluejays improved to 9-5-1 overall, winning for the ninth time in their last 11 games. SDSU dropped below the .500 mark to 9-10 overall.
The Jackrabbits gained an early lead, scoring their lone run of the game in the top of the first inning. Zach Coppola reached on a fielders choice, stole second and scored on Paul Jacobson’s base hit to left field.
Creighton tied the game against SDSU starter Chris Anderson in the home half of the third. Lopez led off with a base hit and later scored on a squeeze bunt by David Wiedeman.
Anderson worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the fourth inning after allowing three consecutive singles to open the frame, but ran into further trouble in the seventh. Fitzgerald started the game-winning rally with a single to center field, which was followed by a Jackrabbit error on a sacrifice bunt attempt by McKewon. A successful sacrifice by Wiedeman set the table for Peter, who lined a single to left field that scored both Fitzgerald and Brad McKewon.
SDSU brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but Bryan Sova came on to record the final out for his second save of the season. Fellow reliever Max Ising was credited with the victory after pitching a scoreless inning.
Anderson pitched 6 1/3 innings for the Jackrabbits, walking one, striking out two and surrendering 10 hits.
The series finale is scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday.
