Cameron White struck out 14 batters in 8 1/3 strong innings and Air Force scored an unearned run in the top of the eighth inning to defeat South Dakota State, 2-1, in non-conference baseball action Friday afternoon at Erv Huether Field.

The Falcons, who won their third game in a row, improved to 9-24 overall. SDSU, which had its two-game home winning streak snapped, dropped to 15-16 on the season.

Tyler Saleck started the game-winning rally with a single to lead off the eighth, advancing to second base when the ball was misplayed in the outfield. After SDSU starter Adam Bray was lifted in favor of closer J.D. Moore, Saleck advanced to third on a fly ball off the bat of Travis Neubeck and scored on a squeeze bunt by Bradley Haslam.

White, meanwhile, retired the final nine batters he faced and did not allow a hit after the fifth inning. The freshman right-hander struck out at least one batter in every inning, walked only one and allowed five hits. Nathan Stanford retired the only two batters he faced to pick up the save.

Bray was nearly equal to the task for the Jackrabbits, notching double figures in strikeouts for the second straight game with 10. The junior right-hander scattered eight hits and walked two in falling to 4-3 on the season.

The game was scoreless until Air Force scored in the top of the fifth inning on three consecutive two-out singles by Griffin Jax, Coleman Poje and Seth Kline.

SDSU answered with a run of its own in the home half of the fifth. Reid Clary and Mitch Foster opened the frame with back-to-back singles, with Clary taking third on Foster’s hit-and-run base hit to right. Cody Sharrow then hit a sacrifice fly to shallow right field in which Noah Pierce made a diving catch across the foul line.

Neubeck was the only player with more than one hit in the contest, going 2-for-4 for Air Force.

Due to impending inclement weather later in the weekend, the two squads have agreed to finish their three-game series with a doubleheader Saturday. First pitch is slated for noon.
