Jackrabbits win series opener, 11-1
FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Adam Bray pitched seven shutout innings and the South Dakota State offense pounded out 14 hits as the Jackrabbit baseball team opened a four-game series against Summit League-leading Fort Wayne with an 11-1 victory Friday afternoon. The game was called after eight innings due to the 10-run rule.
SDSU improved to 18-17 overall and 3-4 in The Summit League. Fort Wayne dropped to 14-21 overall and 6-3 in league play.
The Jackrabbits gained control with a three-run third inning. Matt Johnson and Cody Sharrow each drew a walk to start the inning, with Johnson scoring the first run of the game on an error. Zach Coppola later delivered a sacrifice fly and Jordan Varga plated the final run of the frame with a single.
Johnson singled in a pair of runs in the sixth inning, and the Jackrabbits built their lead to 8-0 in the seventh as Paul Jacobson tripled in two runs and later scored on a wild pitch. Jacobson was 3-for-4 to continue his recent hot streak and raise his batting average to .301 for the season.
SDSU tacked on three more runs in the eighth inning on run-scoring singles by Coppola and Aaron Machbitz, with Eric Danforth adding an RBI double. Machbitz led the Jackrabbits at the plate by going 4-for-5, including his team-leading 11th double of the season.
Meanwhile, Bray extended his streak of consecutive starts allowing one earned run or less to five. The junior right-hander scattered four hits, walked one and struck out eight in improving to 5-3.
Fort Wayne’s lone run of the game came against the Jackrabbit bullpen in the bottom of the eighth via a run-scoring single by Shane Trevino. Kristian Gayday tallied two of the Mastodons’ five hits.
The two teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader Saturday, starting at noon Eastern Time.
