South Dakota State University third baseman Jesse Sawyer has been named Summit League Baseball Player of the Week, league officials announced Monday.
Sawyer, a sophomore from Calgary, Alberta, helped lead the Jackrabbits to a 3-2 record last week, including a sweep of a two-game series at Missouri State. His three-run home run with two outs in the top of the ninth inning of the Missouri State series finale on March 11 tied the game at 6-all, a game SDSU eventually won 7-6 in 12 innings. Sawyer also hit a two-run home run that stood up as the difference in the Jackrabbits' 4-2 victory Sunday afternoon at Creighton (Neb.).
For the week, Sawyer batted .350 (7-for-20) with two home runs, six runs batted in and four runs scored. He compiled a .435 on-base percentage and .650 slugging percentage.
The Jackrabbits, 4-11 this season, continue road action Friday through Sunday with a three-game series at Washington State.
