MURRAY, Ky. - The bottom third of the South Dakota State lineup combined for six hits, four runs scored and four runs batted in, lifting the Jackrabbits to a 9-4 victory over Murray State in the decisive game of a three-game series Sunday afternoon.
The Jackrabbits also received a solid pitching performance from starter Blake Treinen in improving to 2-1 on the season. Murray State dropped to 4-2 overall.
SDSU put together a three-run second inning to take control of the game. Cleanup hitter Jesse Sawyer led off the inning with a double down the left field line and moved to third on a base hit by Zach Rhodes. Jeff Fish plated Sawyer with the first run on a sacrifice fly. Two batters later, Beau Hanowski delivered a run-scoring single and, after stealing second base, Hanowski later came around to score on a base hit by freshman Andrew Melton.
After each team scored a run in the fourth, the Jackrabbits tacked on two more in the fifth. John Lee led off the frame with a solo home run to right center and Fish notched his second sacrifice fly of the game later in the inning to score Joel Blake.
The Thoroughbreds added another run in the fifth inning, but Eric Cain led off the SDSU sixth with a home run. Murray State countered with two runs in the home half of the sixth on a double by Kyle Tiernan to make the score 7-4, but the Jackrabbits cushioned their lead in the eighth, scoring on a sacrifice fly by Billy Stitz and run-scoring single by Lee
Cain, Hanowski and Melton, the seventh, eighth and ninth hitters in the Jackrabbit lineup, each tallied two hits. Hanowski drove in a pair of runs and scored twice, while Cain also scored twice. Lee and Rhodes also tallied two hits apiece for SDSU, which held a 13-9 advantage in hits.
Treinen pitched the first six innings to earn his first career victory. The junior right-hander struck out four, walked two and scattered seven hits. The SDSU bullpen, which allowed only one earned run in 12 1/3 innings during the three-game series, kept the Thorougbreds off the board the rest of the way. Newcomer Alex Oberle finished off the victory by retiring all five batters he faced, including three by strikeout.
Jason Laws led Murray State with three hits.
The Jackrabbits' game originally scheduled for Tuesday (March 2) at Nebraska has been pushed back to March 16 in Lincoln, Neb. SDSU's next action is a four-game series slated for March 5-7 in Colorado Springs, Colo., against Air Force.
