SDSU baseball records win, tie
PINE BLUFF, Ark. - The South Dakota State University baseball team wrapped up its Spring Break trip with a win and a tie Saturday at Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
The Jackrabbits, 2-8-1 overall, opened Saturday's doubleheader with a 4-2 victory. Game 2 was called due to darkness after six innings with the score tied at 3-all.
In the opener, the Jackrabbits took advantage of a dropped infield popup to score twice in the top of the ninth. Winning pitcher Austin Busse pitched a scoreless ninth to preserve the victory in relief of starter Adam Bray. A freshman, Bray allowed only four hits in seven innings to go along with six strikeouts and one walk.
In the nitecap, SDSU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first. After Daniel Marra was hit by a pitch, stole second and came around to score on a double by Eric Cain. One out later, Daniel Telford singled in Cain.
The Jackrabbits extended the lead to 3-0 in the fourth on a two-out single by Melton that drove in Phil Paquette.
UAPB scored all three of its runs in the fifth to tie the game. After one run scored, the Lions loaded the bases. Jackrabbit pitcher Layne Somsen induced the next batter into what appeared to be a double play, but the batter was ruled safe at first and Cornelius Williams scored from second base on the play.
Somsen pitched five innings, giving up three runs on six hits. He struck out five and walked four.
Cain was 2-for-2 with a double and RBI to lead the Jackrabbit offense.
SDSU is scheduled to play Tuesday afternoon at Nebraska. First pitch is slated for 1:35 p.m. at Hawks Field in Lincoln, Neb.
