Huskers top Jacks, 12-3
LINCOLN, Neb. - Nebraska dominated the late innings en route to posting a 12-3 victory over South Dakota State in college baseball action Tuesday afternoon at Hawks Field.
The Cornhuskers improved to 11-6 overall, while SDSU dropped to 2-9-1.
Things started out well for the Jackrabbits, who took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on Zach Briggs' second home run of the season. Daniel Marra scored ahead of Briggs after being hit by a pitch.
SDSU kept Nebraska off the board until the fourth inning, when the Cornhuskers knotted the game at 2-all. Richard Stock plated the first run with a base hit, while the tying run scored on a groundout.
The Cornhuskers began to take control against the Jackrabbit bullpen, starting with a pair of unearned runs in the fifth inning. Nebraska added another unearned run in the sixth, then broke the game open with three runs in the seventh. Jeff Scheffert hit a two-run homer to open the scoring in the seventh, with Blake Headley adding an RBI single later in the frame.
The Jackrabbits' final run of the game came in the top of the seventh on a run-scoring single by Zach Rhodes. Rhodes was the only SDSU player with more than one hit, going 2-for-4 to lead the Jackrabbits' six-hit attack.
Jackrabbit starter Talon Jumper worked the first four innings on the mound. The freshman right-hander did not factor into the decision after allowing two runs on four hits with a strikeout. Blake Fiedelman, the first of five SDSU relievers, took the loss.
Austin Darby led Nebraska's 15-hit outburst with a 3-for-5 afternoon at the plate. Six other Cornhusker players notched two hits each.
