Jackrabbit down Creighton, 5-2
OMAHA, Neb. - Stephen Bougher pitched 7 1/3 strong innings as he won his fifth consecutive start, leading South Dakota State to a 5-2 victory over Creighton before a TD Ameritrade Park crowd of 4,583 Friday night.
With their third consecutive victory, the Jackrabbits improved to 11-17-1 overall. Creighton dropped to 14-17 on the season.
The Jackrabbits never trailed, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Zach Briggs and Beau Hanowski each singled before Daniel Marra delivered a two-out base hit up the middle to score Briggs. SDSU added a run in the fifth inning after Marra reached on an error with two outs, moved to second on a base hit by Eric Cain and scored on Phil Paquette's single up the middle.
SDSU put the game out of reach in the sixth inning by taking advantage of another Bluejay error as Hanowski delivered a two-run single. Cain put the Jackrabbits up 5-0 in the seventh as he led off the frame with a double, took third on a groundout and scored on a passed ball.
Bougher held Creighton scoreless until the eighth, when the Bluejays scored twice. Brennan Murphy singled to lead off the inning and later scored on an infield single by Chance Ross against Jackrabbit reliever Austin Busse. Ross scored the other Bluejay run after a double by Anthony Bemboom and the Jackrabbits' lone error of the game.
Busse pitched a hitless ninth inning to seal the victory¸ Bougher struck out six and walked two in his outing, while Busse fanned two and walked one.
Cain, Hanowski and Paquette each tallied two of the Jackrabbits' nine hits. Mike Gerber was 3-for-3 with a triple for Creighton.
SDSU is scheduled to play Iowa at 10 a.m. Saturday, with another game against Creighton slated for 1 p.m. Sunday.
