Jacks sweep Sunday doubleheader
ROCHESTER, Mich. – Stephen Bougher pitched a three-hit shutout in the opener and the South Dakota State University baseball team completed a doubleheader sweep over Oakland with a 10-3 victory in Game 2 Sunday afternoon.
The Jackrabbits, who won the opener 3-0, improved to 17-12 overall and 5-3 in The Summit League. Oakland dropped to 7-23 overall and 2-4 in league play.
In the opener, SDSU broke into the scoring column in the second inning. With one out, Paul Jacobson reached on an infield single and advanced to second base later on the play on a throwing error. Scott Splett followed with a base hit to left field that was misplayed for another error, allowing Jacobson to score.
The Jackrabbits tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh. Jacobson led off the frame with a double to left field and scored on Splett’s single up the middle. Splett later moved to second on a sacrifice by Eric Danforth, stole third and scored on an error.
Bougher, meanwhile was in control, scattering singles in the second, fourth and seventh innings. Two of the three Golden Grizzlies to record hits were thrown out by SDSU outfielders when trying to stretch their base hits into doubles.
A senior right-hander, Bougher struck out three and walked only one in recording his second shutout of the season and fifth of his career.
Jacobson and Splett tallied two of the Jackrabbits’ five hits against Oakland starter Jason Hager.
In Game 2, SDSU received another strong start from Adam Bray and broke the game open with a five-run fourth inning en route to a 10-3 victory.
The Jackrabbits took advantage of shaky Oakland defense to score twice in the first inning. Al Robbins opened the game by reaching on an error. Eric Danforth followed with a single and Daniel Telford loaded the bases without an out by reaching on an error. Aaron Machbitz plated Robbins with the first run of the game on a single to right field and Danforth also scored on the play when the ball was misplayed for the third OU error of the inning.
Oakland countered with an unearned run in the home half of the first inning, but the Jackrabbits countered with six consecutive runs to build an 8-1 advantage. Telford started a two-out rally in the third with a base hit. The inning was extended when Machbitz reached on a passed ball after striking out, and Jacobson came through with a base hit up the middle to score Telford.
SDSU batted around in the big fourth inning that featured a two-run single and two-run double by Jacobson sandwiched around a run-scoring double by Telford that chased Golden Grizzly starter Jake Paulson.
The Golden Grizzlies got a run back in the home half of the fourth, but SDSU put the game away a pair of runs, including another run-scoring hit by Telford, who ended the game 3-for-5 to lead the Jackrabbits’ 13-hit attack. Jacobson and Danforth each collected a pair of hits.
Todd Dunham capped the scoring with a home run to lead off the fifth inning for Oakland.
Bray worked the first seven innings, allowing six hits and one walk while striking out four. Only one of the three runs he allowed was earned.
