Jacks clinch postseason berth
The South Dakota State women's tennis team clinched its first postseason berth with a 4-0 win versus IUPUI in its season finale on Saturday.
The Jacks closed out cluster play with another dominant performance versus the Jaguars, the team that finished above SDSU in last season's standings.
For the second meet this weekend, the Jacks did not play a doubles match due to a reached team decision.
In singles, Florencia Magni opened the scoring at the top spot with a 6-1, 6-2 win versus Bobbi Modesto at the top spot. Magni finished the season with a 4-2 Summit League record at No. 1.
Tiffany Filipovich scored the last team point when Shelby Hullett retired due to injury.
The two teams did not play doubles.
"The girls finished strong for a great weekend of tennis," head coach Michael Engdahl said. "When you have an undefeated conference cluster, it is something to be proud of. More importantly, we made The Summit League Championships for the first time in program history. The girls earned every win and certainly deserved to be in the field. Ending the regular season on a seven-match winning streak also gives us confidence going into the tournament. We will prepare hard the next few weeks and we are looking forward to seeing what happens in the postseason."
As noted by Coach Engdahl, the women's tennis team finished the season on a seven-meet winning streak. In that time, the Jacks outscored other teams 35-3. In the final four meets, all at the conference cluster, SDSU outscored its opponents 16-1.
The Jacks finished the regular season with a 15-9 overall record, 5-2 in The Summit League and third in the conference standings, its best record and highest finish in the league since becoming a member.
The Summit League Championships are set for April 26-27. The host is to be determined.
