Jackrabbits compete in Omaha
OMAHA, Neb. -- The tandem of Brooke Henry and Jenny Blackburne advanced to the finals of the A Flight dioubles to lead the South Dakota State University women's tennis team in weekend action at the Omaha Collegiate Invitational.
Henry and Blackburne fell 8-5 in Sunday's championship match to Anna Kirshenbaum and Analese Snyder of host Creighton. The duo advanced to the title tilt with an 8-6 win over Steph Petsis and Steph Biehn of North Dakota, followed by an 8-4 win over Jennifer Whateley and Elizabeth Tapia of Northern Colorado later in the day on Saturday.
In other doubles competition, the Jackrabbit duo of Bryna Nasenbeny and Megan McDougall won their opening match in the B Flight, posting an 8-1 win over Jennifer Nieto and Adriana Nieto of Northern Colorado. Nasenbeny and McDougall fell in semifinal action to the team of Mary McMullan and Amanda Noonan from Creighton and were scheduled to play in the third-place match on Sunday.
Final results were incomplete as of late Sunday.
"It was a great weekend of tennis for the Jackrabbits," said head coach Michael Engdahl. "Every single player on the men's and women's team picked up a victory. That shows just how hard everyone has been working the last month and how much we have improved as a team. It is great to see every player contribute to a successful tournament. I don't think we have even come close to 33 wins at this event. We will certainly use this momentum in practice and the tournaments to come the next couple weeks. "
The C Flight doubles team of Anna Botzet and Katie Schwebach also won its opening-round match, 9-7 over Shaylin Prout and Mindy Lawrence from North Dakota. Another team from UND, Megan Sween and Sarah Stajskel turned in an 8-3 win over the Jackrabbit pair in semifinal action.
In singles play, Schwebach was one of four Jackrabbits to win an opening-round match, posting a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Lawrence in the F Flight en route to a trip in the flight finals. Katie Elifson also was victorious in the opening round of the F Flight, notching a 7-6, 6-0 win over Kelsey Bigando of Nebraska-Omaha.
Bethany Goeden and Natalia Medina were first-round winners in the D Flight. Medina rallied for a 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory over Marina Kiefer of South Dakota, while Goeden scored a 6-2, 6-1 win over Jaquline Baude of Northern Colorado.
