Women's tennis finishes play...
The South Dakota State women's tennis team wrapped up the weekend with doubles competition on Saturday at the Hinds-Kellogg Classic.
The tournament was hosted by Western Illinois in Macomb, Ill., and included singles play on Friday and doubles play on Saturday.
The tournament was
separated into flights for positions in the lineup. For example, the No.
1 player from SDSU plays the No. 1 players from the other schools in a
bracket, the No 2 player plays the No. 2 players, etc. The same was true for doubles, as SDSU's No. 1 doubles team played the other No. 1 doubles teams, and so on.
After going 16-10 as a team in singles play on Friday, including three second-place finishes, the Jacks posted a 6-3 record in doubles on Saturday.
"It was awesome to see Bryna and Megan win their bracket as seniors," head coach Michael Engdahl said. "They competed in this tournament the past few years, so it was a nice touch for them to take home the title."
Complete brackets containing both the singles and doubles play can be found at the beginning of this article.
"The girls all played great
doubles today," Engdahl said. "Anytime you play eight hours of tennis the day before, it is difficult to keep the energy and focus the next morning. The girls all
stepped up and played hard."
The Jacks take one and one-half weeks off from competition before traveling to Tulsa, Okla., for the ITA Regional. Play begins on Thursday, Oct. 20, and continues through the weekend.
"After two straight weekends of tennis we know exactly what we need to work on for the ITA's in a couple weeks," Engdahl said. "We are certainly headed in the right direction."
