Volleyball mauls Mocs in Miami
MIAMI – The South Dakota State volleyball team closed the FIU Invitational with a convincing 3-0 sweep of the Tennessee-Chattanooga Mocs on Sunday morning, giving the Jackrabbits their first sweep of the season.
"We played pretty solid at the service line today," head coach Phil McDaniel said. "We were able to keep UTC out of system and we executed our defensive responsibilities throughout the match."
The Jackrabbits, who improve to 2-7 on the season finished with two each in service aces and errors, while the Mocs, who fall to 0-11, finished with two aces, but also with five errors at the service line.
Wagner Larson led the Jackrabbit offense with 14 kills and hit .400 on the match, with just a pair of errors in 30 swings. Courtney Roberts added a career-high nine kills in the win. Lexi Fowler set a new career-high with four block assists to go along with her 29 set assists, as SDSU out-blocked the Mocs 14-6.
Allie Davenport led UTM with 13 kills, while Briana Reid finished with 10 kills and 14 digs for one of two UTM double-doubles. Mocs setter Anne Bachman posted the other double-double with 25 assists and 12 digs.
SDSU returns to action next weekend with three matches at the UTEP/New Mexico State Invitational, with matches vs. Hampton and at UTEP on Friday and a match at New Mexico State on Saturday.
