Volleyball drops Summit League opener at NDSU
FARGO, N.D. – Wagner Larson finished with 20 kills and hit .405 (20-3-42) in South Dakota State’s Summit League opener at North Dakota State on Saturday, but four Bison players posted double figure kills in a 3-1 North Dakota State victory in Fargo, N.D.
The loss, by the set scores of 19-25, 18-25, 26-24 and 19-25, drops the Jackrabbits to 2-11 on the season overall and to 1-0 in league play, while the Bison improve to 1-12 overall and to 1-0 in the league. Despite the loss though, head coach Phil McDaniel did see some positives in the match.
“We got some solid individual performances tonight. Kacey Herrmann,” McDaniel said. “Lizzie Palmer and Alanna Pengilly were solid in serve receive, but NDSU was definitely the aggressor tonight and we did not rise to that level. We got a solid night from our middles as well, but we need sharper focus on every point, which will be this week’s theme as we head into Hobo Day weekend.”
In addition to Larson and her 20 kills, the Jacks got nine kills each from Tiara Gibson and Mikala Hora. Gibson hit .438 (9-2-16) and added a solo block and two block assists. Palmer led the defense with 16 kills, while Lexi Fowler posted a double-double with 44 set assists and 14 digs.
Jenni Fassbender led the Bison attack with 23 kills, Emily Minnick added 15, Emily Miron 13 and Dani DeGagne 12 kills in the win. Emily Milligan led NDSU with 21 digs, with Danielle Dombeck adding 19.
The Jackrabbits look to pick up their first league win on Friday, when they open the home schedule against Summit League newcomer Denver at 7 p.m., followed by a Hobo Day match up with South Dakota on Saturday at 7 p.m.
