Volleyball Wins in Five Sets
BROOKINGS, SD – Three players registered double figures in kills as the South Dakota State volleyball defeated Western Illinois, 3-2, in Summit League play at Frost Arena Saturday. The Jacks won the match 25-22, 22-25, 18-25, 25-23, 15-12.
The win improves SDSU’s records to 5-20 overall and 3-9 in league play. Western Illinois drops to 11-16 overall and 5-7.
Middle blocker Courtney Roberts registered a career-high and match-high 20 kills and collected five block assists. Kacey Hermann posted a double-double with 10 kills and 15 digs, while Wagner Larson had 10 kills and four block assists. Lexi Fowler recorded a double-double with 45 assists and 12 digs. Defensively, the Jacks were led by Alanna Pengilly’s 23 digs and Lizzie Palmer’s 11.
Western Illinois also had four players with 10-or-more kills. Ann Miller had 16, Heather Smith 13, Jordan Jackson with 12 and Mallory Gibson 10. Molly Murphy had a match-high 27 digs.
“Courtney Roberts had a great match for us tonight,” SDSU head coach Phil McDaniel said. “When she got rolling, it was stressing the defense and we were able to get her the ball in good situations. For her to do that, a middle converted to the right side, she’s done a great job for us.”
Roberts came on strong in the fourth and fifth set, hitting a combined .562 (9-0-16). The Jacks as a squad hit well in the final to sets, hitting .359 in the fourth and .438 in the fifth.
To secure their second consecutive home win of the season, the Jacks outscored the Leathernecks, 6-2, in the final set. SDSU used three Western Illinois hitting errors and got kills from Tiara Gibson and Roberts for the win.
South Dakota State plays its final regular-season matches next weekend when it travels to Fort Wayne Nov. 15 and IUPUI Nov. 16.
