Volleyball season ends with 3-0 loss at IUPUI
INDIANAPOLIS – The 2013 volleyball season came to a close on Saturday for South Dakota State, as the Jackrabbits fell dropped a 3-0 contest at IUPUI, falling by the set scores of 25-11, 25-16 and 25-15 to Jaguars, who clinched their second straight regular season crown with the win.
"It's always tought to have that talk in the locker room after your final match of the season," head coach Phil McDaniel said. "After a sluggish start, we began playing closer to our potential, and I can see that we have some solid building blocks that we build on for the future."
The Jackrabbits end the season with a 5-22 overall record and a 3-11 mark in league play, while the Jags, a preseason co-favorite to win the league, did just that with a 17-13 overall record, and an 11-4 mark in the league.
Saturday’s match marked the final contest for Jackrabbit senior Lexi Fowler, who posted 24 set assists in the match, giving her 2,615 for her career, good for seventh all-time in SDSU history. Her seven digs on Saturday gives her 732 for her career.
Kacey Herrmann and Mikala Hora both finished with six kills to lead the Jacks, with Herrmann adding a team-high 11 digs and Hora tying for team-high two block assists. Tiara Gibson also finished with two block assists to go along with her four kills.
IUPUI’s Moriah Fair led all players in the match with 16 kills, with Kaitlyn Hickey adding 10 kills and 12 digs for the matches only double-double. Beth Howard led all-players in the match with 17 digs.
As the season closes for South Dakota State, the Jaguars move on to The Summit League Championships next weekend, which they host, as the number one seed for a second straight season.
