Fiegen reaches 1,000 kill milestone in loss

CEDAR CITY, Utah - South Dakota State junior Kelli Fiegen led the Jackrabbits with 21 kills on Thursday at Southern Utah and finished the match with 1,011 kills for her career, but it unfortunately came in a loss, as the Thunderbirds downed the Jacks 3-1 in Summit League action.

Fiegen's 1,000th kill makes her the 15th member of the SDSU 1,000-Kills Club, and just the sixth member to reach the milestone as a junior.

"Fiegs has worked hard since she got to SDSU," head coach Phil McDaniel said of Fiegen reaching recording her 1,000th career kill. "It's great to see that her extra effort and hard work is rewarded in reaching this milestone."

Already eliminated from Summit League Tournament contention, the loss by the set scores of 25-15, 19-25, 25-22 and 25-18 drops the Jacks to 12-17 on the season overall and 4-11 in league play. The T-birds improve to 9-18 overall and 6-10 in league play.

" We played tough tonight, but ran into a very inspired Southern Utah team. They ended up making fewer mistakes than we did tonight," McDaniel said. "I Loved the way we passed the ball in serve receive tonight. We were in system often this evening."

In addition to her 21 kills, Fiegen added a career-high eight digs and three block assists. Margit Hansing filled in for Kaitlin Klingemann, who sat out the match with an illness, with a career-high 10 kills in the loss. Ellyce Youngren added eight kills and 10 digs.

Lexi Fowler led the Jacks with 45 set assists and finished with 18 digs for her team-high 10th double-double of the season. Shay Birath led the Jacks with 20 digs.

Analaine Mailoto led the victorious Thunderbirds with 18 kills and with 18 digs. Both Cashaana Renfro and Kylie Schofield finished with 14 kills in the win.

The Jacks get Friday off to travel to Tulsa, Okla., where they face Oral Roberts on Saturday at 7 p.m.
