Jacks close the 2011 season at home

With the 2011 road portion of their schedule complete, the Jackrabbits close the 2011 season at home this weekend with matches against UMKC on Friday at 5 p.m., when SDSU honors veterans on Military Appreciation Day, followed by the final match of the season against South Dakota, on Saturday at 7 p.m., when the Jacks honor seniors Emily Palmer and Ellyce Youngren.

SDSU started the final week of the season with its final non-conference match of the season on Monday against No. 12 Northern Iowa.  The Jacks gave the powerful Panthers a good run despite losing 3-0, by the set scores of 25-22, 25-20 and 25-18.

Kelli Fiegen led the Jackrabbits with 10 kills and added a pair of block assists. Kelly Herrmann added nine kills, with a solo block and two block assists. Kaitlin Klingemann finished with eight kills and a match-high four block assists in the loss.

Shay Birath finished with a match-high 19 digs, which moves her into eighth place on the all-time SDSU digs list with 1,314, two three shy of passing Rose Ebnet for seventh all-time.

Fiegen leads the Jacks through 31 matches with 385 kills, with a .339 hitting percentage and with 107 total blocks.

Birath leads the defense with 602 digs, while Lexi Fowler leads the way with 1,095 set assists. Fowler also adds 272 digs, and leads the team with 10 double-doubles. 

MILITARY APPRECIATION DAY SET FOR FRIDAY -To honor those currently serving and those who served our country in the past, and to celebrate Veterans Day, South Dakota State would like to offer two free tickets to all military personnel for the Jackrabbit volleyball/women's basketball doubleheader this Friday at Frost Arena.

All Veterans and current service members with a valid military I.D., copy of their DD form 214 or with a D.A.V, V.A., V.F.W. or American Legion membership card can pick up their two free tickets on the day of the game at Frost Arena.

BIRATH NAMED DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Shay Birath captured her third career defensive player of the week honor on Sept. 19, after posting two double-digit dig matches on the weekend. She added her fourth career defensive player of the week honor on Oct. 17, after setting and SDSU 3-set record with 32 digs at Western Illinois and adding a 20 dig performance at IUPUI.

BIRATH and FIEGEN NAMED TO ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM - Juniors Shay Birath and Kelli Fiegen both earned all-tournament team honors after leading the Jacks to a 3-1 record at the season-opening SpringHill Suites Invitational hosted by Georgia Southern. Birath led the Jacks with 81 digs and added four services aces, while Fiegen led SDSU with 54 kills, a .357 hitting percentage and 10 total blocks.

KLINGEMANN and FIEGEN NAMED TO ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM - Juniors Kaitlin Klingemann and Kelli Fiegen both earned all-tournament team honors after leading the Jacks to a 2-1 record at the Jayhawk Invitational hosted by Kansas. Klingemann recorded 21 kills nine digs and six block assists in the three matches, while Fiegen led the Jacks with 34 kills, a .368 hitting percentage and 13 total blocks.

FIEGEN NAMED TO ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM - Kelli Fiegen posted 57 kills, including a career-high 22 against Arkansas State, over the weekend at the Dr. Mary Jo Wynn Invitational hosted by Missouri State and added 16 total blocks, six solo and 10 block assists, all of which earned her all-tournament team honors for the third weekend in a row. 

FIEGEN SWINGS HERSELF TO 4-SET RECORD - Kelli Fiegen led SDSU with 17 kills in the Jacks 3-1 win over Belmont on Sept. 3, and set a new SDSU 4-set hitting percentage record in the process with 17 kills and no errors in 22 swings, good for a .773 attack percentage. Fiegen breaks the mark of .667 (13-1-18) set by Emily Rooney at Sam Houston State on Sept. 1, 2007.

BIRATH SETS 3-SET DIGS RECORD - Shay Birath led the Jackrabbits with 32 digs in the Jacks 3-0 loss at Western Illinois on Oct. 14, but those 32 digs mark a new 3-set record, topping the old record of 28, set by Samantha Pearson vs. Louisiana-Lafayette on Oct. 31, 2007.

YOUNGREN JOINS THE 1,000-Kills CLUB - Jackrabbit senior Ellyce Youngren entered the 2011 season with 903 career kills, 97 shy of becoming the 14th member of the SDSU 1,000-Kills Club. Her smash down the right line in the Jacks 3-2 win over IUPUI on Sept. 16, not only gave the Jacks the third-set win, but it gave her exactly 1,000 kills for her career. She enters the weekend with 1,123 kills, 15 shy of passing Lisa Freichels (1,137 kills from 1989-93) for 13th all-time at SDSU

FIEGEN SURPASSES 1,000-KILL MILESTONE - Kelli Fiegen needed to top her season-best mark of 352 kills, set in 2010, by five kills to reach the 1,000 kill milestone, which she did on Nov. 3, with 21 kills at Southern Utah. Reaching the milestone not only makes her the 15th member of the 1,000-Kills Club, but also just the sixth member to reach the mark as a junior. Fiegen enters the final weekend of the season with 1,028 kills. 

BIRATH JOINS THE 1,000-DIGS CLUB - Shay Birath took over the starting libero spot as a sophomore in 2010 and led the team with 556 digs, which boosted her career total to 712 and left her 288 digs shy of becoming the 13th member of the SDSU 1,000-Digs Club, and just the fifth member of the club to reach the milestone as a junior. Birath joined the club on Sept. 24, at Oakland, and enters the week with 1,314 career digs, good for eighth all-time at SDSU, and just 23 digs away from climbing all the way to fifth on the all-time charts.


UMKC Kangaroos (11-16, 5-11 Summit) - Winners of four of its last five matches, UMKC looks to end the season on a winning note this weekend against the Jackrabbits on Friday and league-leading North Dakota State on Saturday. The Kangaroos dropped their first 10 games in Summit League play, but rattled off five straight league wins before Oakland snapped that steak last weekend in Kansas City, Mo.

Kelsey Knoche leads the UMKC offense with 292 kills and ranks third on the team with 307 digs. She also adds 52 total blocks and 15 service aces. Elizabeth Beck ranks second on the team with 247 kills and enters the weekend tied for team-high honors with a .216 hitting percentage. Nicole Kerkman leads the Kangaroos with 516 digs and, along with Ella Meier, leads the team with 21 aces. Meier also leads the 'Roos with 716 set assists.

The Series vs. UMKC - The Jackrabbits lead the all-time series 10-1 after winning the first meeting of the season and after sweeping the season series in 2010, when the Jacks won a 3-1 contest in the Jackrabbits home opener on Sept. 10, and then swept the Kangaroos in Kansas City, on Oct. 30. The lone UMKC win in the series came on Oct. 1, 2009, when the 'Roos walked away with a 3-2 win.     

The First Meeting, Sept. 19; Kansas City, Mo. - Kelli Fiegen led the Jackrabbits with 10 kills in the first meeting, and did not record a hitting error in 18 swings for a .556 hitting percentage. She also added five block assists in the win. Fresh off her 1,000-kill milestone night three days earlier, Ellyce Youngren finished with nine kills, adding an ace, two block assists and seven digs.

Lexi Fowler tied a career-high led the Jacks with 13 digs, she also added 30 set assists for third-career double-double and second in three matches. Shay Birath added 12 digs in the win, which gives her 976 for her career, leaving her just 24 shy of joining the SDSU 1,000-Digs Club.

Kelsey Knoche led the Kangaroos with 10 kills and added nine digs in the loss. Nicole Kerkman finished with a match-high 16 digs.

South Dakota Coyotes (13-17, 6-10 Summit) - Like the Jackrabbits, the Coyotes close the 2011 season with a pair of matches this weekend. South Dakota plays at league-leading North Dakota State on Friday before closing the season on Saturday in Brookings.

The Coyotes enter the weekend riding a four-match losing streak after dropping a pair of Summit League matches at home last weekend, falling 3-2 against Oakland on Friday and 3-1 against IPFW on Sunday in the DakotaDome.

Kendall Kritenbrink easily leads the Coyote offense with 437 kills this season despite missing six matches, including the first meeting with the Jackrabbits. Kritenbrink also adds 192 digs and 18 service aces. Tahnee Reed ranks second on the team with 248 kills, followed closely by Amber Aschoff with 246 and Natalie Walseth with 245. Reed also ranks second on the team with 33 aces and with 92 total blocks. Aschoff adds 11 aces and 59 blocks, while Walseth adds a team-high 97 total blocks. Tori Kroll leads the Coyotes with 1,127 set assists and Carol Logato leads the team with 476 digs.

The Series vs. South Dakota - The Jackrabbits lead the all-time series with South Dakota 53-8, including a 40-match streak from 1984-2002. The Jacks won the first meeting last season in Fargo, N.D., but the Coyotes won the last two meetings, including a 3-2 win last season and 3-1 in the first meeting this season in Vermillion. 

The First Meeting, Oct. 3; Vermillion, S.D. - SDSU took the Coyotes to four sets in the first meeting, but for the first time all season, the Jackrabbits dropped a match that went more than three sets, falling to the Coyotes 3-1 at the DakotaDome, by the set scores of 25-20, 14-25, 19-25 and 22-25.

Kelli Fiegen led the Jackrabbits with 14 kills in the loss, adding two solo and two block assists. Kaitlin Klingemann finished with 13 kills, with seven digs and a block assist.

Shay Birath led the defense with 26 digs. Ellyce Youngren added 12 and Lexi Fowler 10 digs to go along with her 35 set assists, which gives her a second straight double-double and her fifth of the season.

Tahnee Reed led the Coyotes with 19 kills and hit .471 (19-3-34). Natalie Walseth added 15 kills with a .609 hitting percentage (16-2-23), as the Coyotes out-hit the Jacks .247-.134 as a team.
