Jacks make it six straight in the Summit
South Dakota State ran its Summit League win streak to six straight and snapped a six match losing streak against North Dakota State on Saturday with a 3-1 win over the Bison in front of a loud crowd of 742 at Frost Arena.
The Jacks, who beat the Bison for the first time since Sept. 16, 2007, improve to 14-13 overall and 10-6 in The Summit League by the set scores of 20-25, 25-10, 25-20 and 29-27. NDSU falls to 16-10 overall and to 12-4 in league play.
Kelli Fiegen led the Jackrabbit attack with 13 kills in the night and added a pair of solo blocks and three block assists. Kaitlin Klingemann added 11 kills, three aces, two block assists and a solo block in the win.
Emily Palmer also posted three of the Jackrabbits 10 service aces on the night and added 12 digs. Shay Birath led the Jacks with 24 digs and Thyele Rechatiko 12 digs to go with her match-high 40 set assists to complete her team-high 16th double-double of the season.
Chrissy Knuth led NDSU with 11 kills. Brynn Joki added nine kills and a match high five service aces, although she also committed five service errors.
The Jacks scored first in all four sets, but the Bison broke the last of five ties in the first set with a 4-0 run to go up 15-11 and never trailed again in the set.
SDSU used a 15-2 run in the second set to secure an east 25-10 win and then closed the third set on a 6-1 run to secure a 25-20 win and a 2-1 advantage in the match.
The first three sets saw just seven ties and a single lead change, but that trend came to a screeching halt in the fourth set, which featured 14 tie scores and eight lead changes.
Down 11-8, the Jacks rattled off a 9-1 run to go up 17-12, but the Bison answered with an 8-3 run to tie the match at 20-all. A back-and-forth battle followed, with the Bison getting one chance at set point and the Jacks one chance at match point before they capitalized the second time on block assists from Klingemann and Ellyce Youngren.
Still very much in the thick of The Summit League Tournament chase, the Jackrabbits return to action on Thursday, Veteran's Day, when the Jackrabbits host Oral Roberts on Military Appreciation Night at 7 p.m. All veterans or active duty military personnel receive two free tickets to the match with a valid military ID.
