Jackrabbit volleyball signs three
The South Dakota State Volleyball team signed a trio of players to National Letters of Intent during the early signing period who indicated their plans to enroll at South Dakota State University in the fall of 2011 and play volleyball for the Jackrabbits.
"We're excited to introduce a solid incoming class for the fall of 2011," SDSU head volleyball coach Nanabah Allison-Brewer said of the signings. "These ladies bring the ability to immediately impact the program, as well as further provide us with the depth we need in the outside, middle and setter positions."
The three early
- Margit Hansing - 6-0, OH, Urbandale, Iowa (Urbandale H.S.)
- Sydney Howard - 5-11, S, Cedar Falls, Iowa (Cedar Falls H.S.)
- Wagner Larson - 6-2, MH, Sioux Falls, S.D. (Roosevelt H.S.)
A team captain in 2010, Hansing posted 419 kills and hit .315 in her senior season in leading Urbandale High School to the 2010 state tournament. She also added 230 digs, 69 total blocks and 51 service aces. All of those totals garnered her first team all-conference and first team all-district honors for a second straight year and an all Des Moines Register All-Central Iowa Metro League Elite Team selection.
"Margit Hansing is a six rotation player with great vision and understanding of the game," Allison-Brewer said. "This young lady is trained by a top club program in the state of Iowa that gives us a springboard to build off of as a highly successful defensive and offensive player."
Off the court, Hansing earned academic all-conference honors in volleyball, tennis and softball in 2010 and serves in the student senate and in the National Conference on Youth Leadership. An honor roll student in all four years in high school, her academic resume includes membership in the National Honor Society and the Spanish National Honor Society.
A team captain, team MVP, Howard started all 94 sets in her senior year, posting 751 set assists, 299 digs, 114 kills, 66 blocks and 26 services aces. Her on court prowess earned her unanimous first team all-conference and first team all-district selections in each of the last two seasons and first team all-metro in each of the last three seasons.
"I can't say enough about Sydney's work ethic and drive as an athlete," Allison-Brewer said. "These characteristics make her a powerful leader that compliments her nice hands, touch and jumping ability as a lefty setter."
The accolades continue to roll in for Sioux Falls Roosevelt product Wagner Larson. A four-year letterwinner in volleyball and three-year letterwinner in basketball, Larson led the Rough Riders to a runner up finish at the 2010 state tournament, where she compiled a perfect hitting percentage in all three matches (42-0-42).
For the season, Larson recorded 376 kills and a .527 hitting percentage with 52 digs and 83 total blocks.
"Wagner is one of our top athletes in the state of South Dakota," Allison-Brewer said. "Her participation with one of the best high school programs, along with her fluid and natural athletic gifts makes her a perfect fit for our team."
Off the court, the all-Greater Dakota Conference academic team selections maintains a place on the honor roll and in the National Honor Society.
