Fiegen A2 Blog #5
May 27, 2011
The last day of training flew by just like all the others. We had only one session today so we could let our bodies recover and rest before competition TOMORROW!
The first session started with a few drills just to get us moving and tweak some last minute rotations. We started with a drill called "pass quick to hit quick," which is a serve receive drill specifically for us middles working on us getting involved with the offense right off the bat. The coaches really wanted to focus on serving and especially receive. Like I mentioned in my last blog, we have a very dynamic group, so we worked on all the different attacking patterns we can run out of two and three hitter rotations. We spent the remainder of the practice scrimmaging against Team White and Team Blue. Scrimmage was super exciting because we finally got to see what Team Red looked like in action!
With only one practice, we wondered what we would do with the rest of our open afternoon. In a team meeting at 2 p.m., they informed us that we would be going to an assisted living and nursing home facility to visit with the residents. Oh my goodness, it was so so so much fun! All of us girls and the coaching staff that went had a blast! When we arrived we initially just started chatting with the residents. However, shortly after arriving, we hear a man over a microphone welcoming us. Come to find out that he was an entertainer, and they were celebrating May birthdays at the assisted living center. The guy looked like he walked straight out of the 70's or 80's! He was rockin' feathered and fluffed hair down to his shoulders, and he could sing like the lead singer of Journey or something!! He was too legit. He was singing all sorts of oldies and we ended up having a really fun dance party with the residents and everyone was smiling and laughing and moving to the beat and clapping. The afternoon was too perfect!
Tomorrow is game day! It's here already I cannot believe it. Team Red plays at 11:40 a.m. and 2:20 p.m. There are five teams in our bracket this weekend, which starts with two days of pool play on Saturday and Sunday, with two matches played each day. We start tournament play on Monday and Tuesday, with seedings based on pool play.
Go Big. Go Blue. Go Jacks!
