ELMHURST, Ill. – The Summit League selected five men’s basketball players to the 2012-13 Summit League Academic All-League Team as voted by the Faculty Athletic Representatives and Sports Information Directors of the league’s nine member institutions. Voters chose the student-athletes for the honor based on their academic and athletic performances this season.

Tournament champion South Dakota State led the way with two selections in guard Brayden Carlson and forward Jordan Dykstra. The three players joining the two Jackrabbits include Oakland’s Travis Bader, Western Illinois’ Jack Houpt and Omaha’s John Karhoff.

Carlson, Dykstra and Karhoff each earned Capital One Academic All-District selections in February. Bader (1st team) and Dykstra (2nd team) were named All-Summit League.

Carlson, who carries a 3.924 GPA in business economics, started all 34 games to date for South Dakota State. He averages 8.7 points per game and ranks third on the team with 1.4 three-pointers per contest. In an early season game against Marshall, Carlson scored a career-high 23 points and equaled his career-best with five three-pointers.

Dykstra, with a 3.68 GPA in biology/pre-dentistry, ranks third in The Summit League in both rebounding (7.9 rpg) and three-point field goal percentage (.430). He started all 34 games for the Jackrabbits and ranks second on the team with 12.5 points per game.

Bader, a graduate student with a 3.45 GPA in communications, leads the nation in three-point field goals made per game (4.2) and is fifth in scoring (21.9 ppg). He recorded the NCAA’s second-highest scoring game this season with 47 points against IUPUI in January.

Houpt, a graduate student with a 3.666 GPA in sport management, has started all 30 games for the Leathernecks this season and averages 7.4 points and 4.2 rebounds per game. He is shooting 91.7 percent from the free throw line and 41.2 percent from three-point range while helping lead his team to the regular season co-championship.

Karhoff, who has a 3.64 GPA in journalism, started all 31 games and ranked second on his team in both scoring (12.0 ppg) and rebounding (4.1 rpg) this season.

To make themselves eligible for the Academic All-League team, a student-athlete must hold a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.30 (on a 4.0 scale), complete at least one full academic year at the current institution and participate in 50 percent of their team’s competitions.
