Jacks stumble at Oral Roberts
TULSA, Okla. - South Dakota State got 18 points from Nate Wolters and Dale Moss tied a season-high with 17 points, but Oral Roberts held Clint Sargent to eight and Jordan Dykstra to just four points in a 77-73 Golden Eagles win on Thursday in snowy Tulsa, Okla.
The Jackrabbits, who braved treacherous roads through Missouri and Oklahoma just to get to Tulsa, fall to 14-9 overall and an even 6-6 in The Summit League. ORU improves to 10-14 overall and 7-5 in league play.
"It wasn't the shooting, it was the rebounding," head coach Scott Nagy said. "You can't get beat 16 on the glass and lose by four and think that wasn't the reason you lost."
Oral Roberts won the rebounding battle 45-29, including a 20-9 edge on the offensive glass, which resulted in 23 second chance points for the Golden Eagles, compared to 13 for SDSU.
Dominique Morrison led a trio of ORU players in double figures with 22 points. Steven Roundtree and Damen Bell-Holter both scored 18 points and both posted double-doubles, with 10 rebounds for Roundtree and a game-high 15 for Bell-Holter.
The home team scored first, but the Jacks bounced right back with one of Moss' career-high three triples to put SDSU up 3-2 early. From there the Jacks built a nine-point lead at 18-9 with just over 13 minutes to play in the first half.
ORU quickly got back into the game and the lead changed hands four times in the final five and a half minutes, but a Wolters bucket with three seconds left in the half gave SDSU a 42-38 lead at halftime.
The back and forth play continued into the second half, which featured nine more ties and seven more lead changes. It looked like the Golden Eagles put the game away when they went up 72-65 with 4:31 left to play, but an 8-0 SDSU put the Jacks up 73-72 with two minutes to play.
The Jacks didn't score again after that, while the Golden Eagles tossed in a pair of free throws to take the lead for good and notched three more second chance points for the final 77-73 margin.
The Jackrabbits look to turn it around on Saturday, when they travel to Shreveport, La., to take on Centenary, who fell to 0-24 on the season on Thursday with an 83-63 loss to North Dakota State. The Jacks and Gents tip-off at 4:30 p.m., on Saturday in the Gold Dome.
